NDMVA teams work with local partners to increase access to education and other essential social services. We focus on providing small-group and one-on-one instruction in K-12 schools and conduct specialized outreach to help families in the community access resources. By collaborating with local organizations, NDMVA aims to make a lasting impression on the lives of individuals and families in the region. As a member, you will serve at Farm Discovery and Live Earth Farm for 11 months, full-time (up to 1700 hours), providing outdoor education under the supervision of an on-site supervisor, and city Site Director.

About Farm Discovery and Live Earth Farm

Farm Discovery is a nonprofit organization working in the Pajaro Valley community to empower youth and families to build and sustain healthy food, farming, social and natural systems.

Live Earth Farm is a 150 acre patchwork of working organic farm, riparian corridor, oak and redwood forest in the Pajaro Valley of Santa Cruz County, California.

Farm Discovery at Live Earth Farm promotes sustainability and community health through educational programs and collaborative agricultural, ecological, and social systems. The program inspires youth and families to transform their relationship with food, farming, and nature. In addition, Live Earth Farm grows and delivers nutritious, organic food to those in need, such as seniors, veterans, foster youth, and farmworkers.

Position Description

We are looking for a highly motivated, detail-oriented, tech-literate and energetic person for this position. The NDMV-AmeriCorps Service Member will support food, farming and nature education programming. This is a hands-on role that involves educating youth about the food system from production to consumption to food justice. They should be able to inspire the youth we serve utilizing relationship-building skills, clear communication and willing to share their enthusiasm with Farm Discovery students while creating a safe space on the farm and in the kitchen.

The ideal candidate is passionate about the missions of NDMV-AmeriCorps and Farm Discovery at Live Earth Farm, with a background or interest in education, farming, and cooking. Farming components in support of our farm based programming include assisting with the up to 3-acre Discovery Garden, Education Fields, small goatherd and chicken flocks, as well as coordinating with farm staff and volunteers to accomplish large seasonal projects. You will not be behind the scenes, but very much a major partner in the program team in running programs with youth on the land and in the kitchen. The role includes some administrative duties.

This open position will work in concert with our Education Associate, and Assistant Director of Education in the planning, implementation, evaluation and development of these core programs, taking leadership on the culinary aspects.

Responsibilities:

  • Farming and culinary curriculum implementation.
  • Implement all education programs at the direction of or in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Education.
  • Serve with the Education team and Field Manager on day-to-day organic farming operations with ongoing coordination with Live Earth Farm production operations.
  • Propagation and greenhouse work, planting, composting, harvesting, and post harvest handling.
  • Goat herd and flocks of chickens through daily husbandry. Facilitate breeding and assist in kidding of goats, and raising of baby chicks.
  • Maintain order and cleanliness of the education barn, kitchen classroom, and restroom.
  • Support Field Manager with the implementation of the value-added product line.
  • Serve with program and administration staff to accomplish big events Fall Feast in the Fields, as well as smaller community building and fundraising events (Supporter’s Picnic, Holiday Sip & Shop, Land Stewardship Workdays).
  • Implement in program evaluation (quantitative and qualitative).
  • Use computer word processing, spreadsheet, and database software to prepare reports, memos, and documents
  • Provide administrative support to the program staff in support or maintaining program records.
  • Assist in maintenance of Farm Discovery customer database (Salesforce software)
  • Act as a friendly ambassador, welcoming the public & upholding the mission of Farm Discovery and Live Earth Farm
  • Support the piloting of new weekend event programs such as workshops, AirBnB experiences and farm campouts.
  • Support program outreach to local and regional agricultural and business communities to help develop relationships to help sustain Farm Discovery programs.
  • Support corporate volunteer partnership events.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $2,636.36 per month
