Job Description
Position Summary
This is a full-time seasonal position located on a United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service (USFS) unit: the James River & Warm Springs Ranger Districts of the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest in Virginia. Interns are responsible for performing technical duties in timber stand improvement, reforestation, and tree improvement. Interns will work alongside USFS staff, partners, and other workforce development interns and crews.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
This position performs a variety of routine and frequently complex tasks involving techniques and practices relating to natural resources management programs, (i.e., timber and silviculture). Successful accomplishment of the assignments supports field projects and program planning activities for the unit. Interns may perform any or a combination of the following duties: Vegetation: Participates in noxious plant control, seeding, or similar projects by flagging boundaries, operating equipment, and carrying out kill studies. Identifies plant specimens in the field and collects and prepares specimens. Identifies plants and noxious weeds and determines how they grow. Applies the proper chemicals to control noxious weeds. Uses botanical key to identify plants encountered during field trips or surveys of forest and range areas. Compiles and summarizes the vegetation types obtained from ground surveys including forest health monitoring, biological evaluations, and range surveys. Silviculture: Inspects silvicultural contract work for compliance with contract. Explains steps necessary for compliance to contractor and reports violations to COR. May act as COR on various silvicultural contracts. Examines sapling and larger stands to collect and record data on stocking, density, condition, insects, disease, site index, and ground vegetation. May operate chainsaws and other power equipment to implement thinning, planting, pruning, fire suppression and other silvicultural projects. Follows silvicultural prescriptions and directs work to accomplish timber stand objectives. May perform maintenance and cleaning of power equipment and hand tools.

Living Accommodations
Leatherwood is a log lodge situated on lake Moomaw. Each tenant has an individual bedroom with shared common areas (kitchen, dining room, living room). Internet, electricity and water are all included in the monthly rate. Kitchen is stocked with cookware that tenants will need. Tenants are expected to help keep the common areas clean.
Compensation
- $400/week Living Allowance
- $1,100/month Housing Allowance
- $1,100 Travel Allowance, paid once
- Eligible for AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,718.25, to be received upon successful completion of position
- Eligible candidates will accrue hours toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) Noncompetitive Hiring Authority.
All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
