Ask A Librarian Intern

 

W&M Libraries Ask A Librarian Paid Internship (remote, hybrid, or in person)

William & Mary Libraries seeks applicants for our Ask A Librarian Internship.  This 10-hour/week internship can be remote, in-person, or hybrid and provides current library school students and recent graduates with hands-on experience in academic librarianship.  Interns will receive training and support from a librarian supervisor in order to assist users through the Ask A Librarian chat reference service and through individual consultations for approximately 6 hours/week.  Additionally, the intern will complete another project related to reference and instruction, assigned based on interest and availability.

 

The Ask A Librarian Internship Program seeks to provide meaningful working experiences that relate to the goals and interests of the intern. BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) Library & Information Science students and recent graduates are highly encouraged to apply. We are also interested in providing this experience to those who are interested in academic librarianship but have not yet had the opportunity to gain such experience.

 

This position is for the fall semester, with the possibility to extend. Applications will be accepted until July 1, 2024.

 

Compensation

$20/hour

Schedule

The schedule is variable, but requires six hours of reference service (chat or consultations) and four hours of working on a project and meeting with the supervisor, for a total of 10 hours per week. 

Duties

  • Provide research assistance to users
  • Refer users to appropriate Library personnel as needed
  • Successfully complete projects as directed by intern supervisor
  • Meet with intern supervisor once per week

Required Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited library science program or have graduated from an MLS program within the past year, and be a United States resident
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to evaluate, understand, and respond to research questions

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated effective communication skills
  • Strong commitment to service
  • Preference given to Virginia residents
