The Prospect KC Volunteer Coordinator VISTA

Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) is a government program and branch of AmeriCorps that places volunteers in nonprofit community organizations where they will complete capacity building projects over the course of one year with the goal of reducing and eliminating poverty in the United States.

AmeriCorps mission is “to strengthen communities and develop leaders through direct, team-based direct national and community service.”

The Prospect KC’s programs target people who live at or below the Federal poverty level in Kansas City and Jackson County. Food insecurity, a direct result of low wages and poverty, forces 94,040 people (13.6% of Jackson County residents) to face hard choices about how to spend their money. A Food Apartheid Area is a geographic area that lacks adequate retail sources for nutrient-dense foods, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat, and fish, making these items unobtainable or prohibitively expensive. Studies show these areas develop due to social, economic, and political conditions that limit access to healthy foods. Food Apartheid Areas typically exist in economically depressed, low-income communities, which generally have a higher proportion of minority Populations. The Volunteer Coordinator VISTA will help The Prospect KC develop a strong volunteer program and volunteer management systems in order to expand the organization's capacity to serve more community members experiencing food insecurity. The VISTA member will develop and implement a volunteer recruitment, training, and retention plan that will improve The Prospect’s ability to effectively serve the target population long term.
