Kanbe's Markets: Development Coordinator VISTA

Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) is a government program and branch of AmeriCorps that places volunteers in nonprofit community organizations where they will complete capacity building projects over the course of one year with the goal of reducing and eliminating poverty in the United States.

AmeriCorps mission is “to strengthen communities and develop leaders through direct, team-based direct national and community service.”
The USDA defines a home without access to fresh fruits and vegetables within ½ mile of their location as being located in a “food desert.” This overwhelming reality plagues communities all across the Kansas City Metro leaving many homes, many families, without access to regular, affordable, quality produce. Kanbe’s Markets works to restore that access by working with neighborhoods across the metro to supply produce for sale on consignment. To perform these operations, Kanbe’s is building a robust development team to cultivate a network of individual donors and plan and execute a number of events aimed at raising awareness and inviting people into our social justice initiative.

Member Duties : In the initial phase, the VISTA will audit, in partnership with the Kanbe’s Development Team, the fundraising efforts aimed at individual “Grassroots Growers.” Over the course of the VISTA’s service, a series of new fundraising events will be introduced to the Kanbe’s calendar. The VISTA will develop an organizational plan and build the structure for these events alongside the Development Team. At the conclusion of the VISTA’s year, an evaluation and formalization plan will be drafted for expansion of the donor base and the increased scale of the following year’s events. Over the course of the VISTA’s service, a series of new fundraising events will be introduced to the Kanbe’s calendar.
