Water Plant Operator

Under the general supervision of the Water Plant Superintendent, operates and controls an entire process or system of machines, often through the use of control boards, to transfer or treat the community drinking water supply. Required to observe and adjust gages/filters/pumps/valves/chemical feeders to purify an adequate water supply.

Required Minimum Entrance Qualifications

1. Must be a high school graduate or hold a General Education Degree (GED) with a post secondary education level to include courses in chemistry, additional courses in math, biology, and electricity preferred.

2. One year of experience in the operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment to include electrical and instrumentation experience.

3. Possess a valid Michigan motor vehicle operator license.

4. Possess a State of Michigan Drinking Water Certification F-4 license (or ability to obtain within 18 months of employment).

Physical Conditions / Work Location

The work environment varies from indoor laboratory work to the outdoor grounds maintenance involving exposure to chemicals, fumes and vapors, and electrical hazards. The indoor work normally is quiet to moderately noisy as well as the outdoor work. Maintenance work may require heavy lifting, pushing/pulling up to 100 pounds in lower level areas.

Oral Exam - 100%

The selected candidate must undergo a psychological evaluation, a post-offer medical examination and drug screening test given by a City appointed physician before the first day of employment. Appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment will be considered permanent.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present and future vacancies in this classification in the City system. For each opening, the Department Head has her/his choice of the candidates who meet the required minimum entrance qualifications. This list remains in effect for up to one year unless exhausted or extended.
