This position serves as a/the (System Operations Controller)  performing basic computer operating functions using operating system commands to monitor data processing environments serving DoIT supported agencies. 

In this role you will perform basic job control procedures including review, research and analysis work to resolve scheduling or job stream errors using Job Control Language (JCL). 

In addition, you will work closely with technical personnel including application, system programming staff and production control daily with review and reporting of batch processing issues.

Essential Functions

35% Under general supervision, serves as a System Operations Controller for the Department of Innovation & Technology (DoIT): 

 

  • Performs computer operator duties using basic operating system command vocabulary to monitor data processing environments, multi-processing schedules, and systems for assigned agencies.
  • Accesses software such as, but not limited to Time Sharing Options/Interactive System Productivity Facility (TSO/ISPF), multiple virtual storage (MVS), CA-SCHEDULER, ZEKE and Document Direct/MOBIUS.
  • Reports abends and/or system errors to lead worker.
  • Makes recommendations to lead worker for error resolution.
  • Enters appropriate commands to correct problems, upon approval.
  • Enters commands to submit, edit, and track job processing to completion within an appropriate timeframe utilizing a personal computer.
  • Provides information to senior staff for logs and reports.

 

30% Performs job control procedures including review, research and analysis work to resolve scheduling or job stream errors using Job Control Language (JCL), available documentation, and procedures: 

 

  • Reports mistakes, errors, or inconsistencies to lead worker, making recommendations for resolution.
  • Enters appropriate operating system commands and edits JCL to correct the problem, and performs submission to achieve successful job completions, upon approval.
  • Completes and maintains job assignment production logs, reports documentation, and suggests operational improvements to management.

 

25% Assists and works closely with technical personnel, including application and system programming and production control staff, to review and report problems or errors with batch jobs and schedules: 

  • Performs problem resolution as directed.
  • Performs entries of job abends/restarts into appropriate shift logs on EPOS Portal/SharePoint, including error resolution.

Essential Functions (continued)

5% Keeps abreast of new developments in the Information Technology field:  

 

  • Continues education by attending meetings, training sessions, seminars and conferences to increase familiarity with and remain current on products, vendors, techniques, and procedures.
  • Attends demonstrations and exhibitions related to assigned operations.

 

5% Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

1.    Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
2.    Requires one (1) year of related data processing experience.


Qualifying state employees in the employee Upward Mobility Program may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the stated requirements for this classification. 

Preferred Qualifications

1.    One (1) year of professional experience with automated archival and report distribution software such as Document Direct/Mobius or similar. 
2.    Working knowledge of JCL, TSO, or ISPF.
3.    Working knowledge of automated scheduling software such as CA-Scheduler, or similar.
4.    Ability to analyze data logically and exercise sound judgment in defining and evaluating problems of an operational or procedural nature.
5.    Ability to gain and maintain effective working relationships with associates, vendors, clients, and others.
6.    Developed verbal and written communication skills to present technical information to others with clarity and precision.

9.    Requires the ability to lift and carry objects or equipment weighing up to 10 pounds. This is considered sedentary work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(a)). Sedentary work involves lifting no more than 10 pounds at a time and requires occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing.
