Natural Resource Steward

About us: 
The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and young adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, and community green spaces across the country.

Program Description:
The Cle Elum Ranger District of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in north-central Washington is looking for two SCA Interns to serve for 16 weeks as Frontcountry Rangers. The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest is a large and diverse landscape, encompassing 3.8 million acres along the east slopes of the Cascade Range in Washington.

The interns will represent the USFS in agency uniforms while patrolling developed and dispersed areas of the district.  Duties include teaching Leave No Trace principles, refurnishing trailhead bulletin boards, communicating regulations, refurbishing picnic tables, and other facility maintenance tasks.  Time will be spent cleaning restrooms and emptying refuse containers as needed.  A high degree of visitor interaction is involved, all in support of sustainable outdoor recreation.

  • $1,100* To/From Travel Allowance, paid once with first paycheck
    • USFS bunkhouse Housing provided on-site.
  • Eligible for AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,824 received upon successful completion of position and 450 service hours.
  • Eligible for the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority upon successful completion of position (640hrs minimum of service)—can be combined with another internship

    *All Allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.


Member Qualifications: 

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Personal vehicle required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Willingness and ability to work well independently and as a team.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. (day pack/bags of equipment)
    • Physical fitness is critical.
  • Good communication, teamwork skills, and the ability to interact professionally with the public, including in high use areas.
  • An understanding of Leave No Trace principles and the Wilderness Act
  • A positive attitude

Additional: 
Must be eligible to serve as an AmeriCorps Member. This includes:  

  • Being a citizen, permanent resident, or national of the United States.
  • Being at least 18 years or older.
  • Having a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Being willing to undergo National Service Criminal History Check, including criminal background, sex offender and FBI checks.
