Laboratory Assistant

Principal Function: The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for preparing samples for analysis or experimentation according to established protocols. This may involve measuring, mixing, diluting, or otherwise manipulating substances. Prepare various types of buffers according to established protocols and recipes. The Laboratory Assistant will also make sure equipment is properly maintained and in good working order. This employee will help in other departments as determined by their supervisor. The lab assistant plays a vital role in supporting the research efforts of scientists by ensuring that they have the necessary materials and equipment prepared for their experiments.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Set up laboratory equipment and instrumentation, such as pipettes, plate washers, centrifuges, etc. for daily use.
  • Prepare a variety of buffers, solutions, and other reagents required for experiments, following standard operating procedures.
  • Support laboratory operations by performing data entry tasks in various systems including the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Performs sample preparation and experimental set-up supporting scientific analysis.
  • Organizes and tracks laboratory reagents and supply inventory.
  • Ensure the proper labeling and storage of prepared buffers to maintain their stability and prevent contamination.
  • Monitor buffer stock levels and replenish supplies as needed.
  • Assist scientists in setting up experiments, including preparing samples, labeling tubes, and organizing materials.
  • Maintain accurate records of buffer and solution preparation, including details such as ingredients, concentrations, and expiration dates.
  • Document any deviations from standard procedures or unexpected observations encountered during preparation or experimentation.
  • Record equipment calibration and maintenance activities to ensure compliance with quality standards.
  • Maintain open communication with scientists and other laboratory personnel to coordinate tasks and address any issues or concerns.
  • Other Duties as assigned.
