Field Leader-SCA UPS Summer Crew Leader

Conservation Begins Here.

 

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, and community green spaces across the country.

 

Training Dates: (National Training 05/13/24 to 05/25/24 & In-Person Local Training 05/28/24 to 05/31/24) (paid mandatory training)

Program Dates: (06/03/24 to 07/26/24)

Location (City and State): Atlanta, GA

 

Primary Responsibilities:

As Crew Leader, you will be working with a co-lead to guide and inspire a team of ten high school-aged youth (14 –19) from the metro Atlanta, GA area. This is an affinity crew for self-identified African American youth. The crew will be working on projects such as invasive species removal, habitat restoration, litter abatement, and trail work in various sites throughout local National Park Service sites. Leaders will be responsible for incorporating and planning environmental education curriculum. Project monitoring and data collection will also be required throughout the season.

 

Specifically, the Crew Leader will:

  • Act as a Crew Supervisor, by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics
  • Serve as an Advisor, by training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardship
  • Act as a Project Manager, by communicating with agency park partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA
  • Perform tasks as a Program Administrator, by organizing logistics, completing documentation, managing a budget, completing end of the season report, and communicating with SCA staff

Leader Qualifications:

  • Experience working with youth or young adults, teaching, or environmental education a plus
  • Experience with conservation work skills or related skills preferred – i.e., trail maintenance, trail construction, habitat restoration, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening
  • Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements, and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
  • First aid and CPR certification
  • Must be able to attend Crew Leader training: [05/15/24 to 05/31/24]
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
  • Must have the ability to legally work in the US
  • Must have a valid driver’s license for 3+ years and MVR that meets SCA standards
  • Must be available for all days of work 06/03/24-07/26/24

 

Leader Benefits and Compensation:

  • $750.00 salary compensation.
  • Each Crew leader is given a van to transport crew members and to travel to work site each day
  • Each Crew leader is give credit card for program expenses and gas for van.
