Job Summary:

This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Carpenter position for the Facilities Services department at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Carpenter will work as a part of the Facilities Operations & Maintenance team at Oregon State University (OSU) to provide carpentry services to departments and programs across campus.

The focus of the Facilities Services Carpentry unit is quality, efficiency, and customer service oriented Operational Maintenance, Repair, and Construction.

The purpose of this position is to provide quality, courteous, and timely facilities maintenance services to all internal and external customers; to directly support operations and maintenance; to operate, maintain, repair, and modernize equipment and systems in all facilities to provide continuous, reliable and efficient service; to answer after hours calls; provide quality work; to perform preventive maintenance; to estimate time, material, and resource needs; to coordinate work with supported units; and to provide professional quality services to all campus customers.

Key Responsibilities

40% Carpentry:

• Performs general carpentry work on Floors, stairs, partitions, doors, windows, screens, roofs and a variety of wood fixtures; repairs tables, desks, chairs, benches, and other furniture.

• Frame, clad framing as required with sheetrock, paneling and ceiling tile, build forms, etc.

• Install underlayment and sheeting.

• Installs smart boards/AV equipment and coordinates work with other journey level positions to complete projects.

• Constructs furniture and cabinets using stationary power tools in a woodworking shop. tools used may include, but are not limited to, power saws, joiners, planers, sanding and routing machines.

40% Repair/Replace/Inspect:

• Repairs, replaces, and inspects Doors, windows, glass, roofs, window cords, locks, closers, acoustic tile and floor tile.

• Install weather stripping.

• Cleans, sharpens, and repairs tools.

• Order supplies and maintains inventory of materials.

• May be required, on occasion, to perform other construction related activities such as installing plumbing, electrical work, painting, plastic laminate, floor and ceiling tile, and/or finishing concrete.

10% Mill work:

• Field measure, size, fabricate and install items such as constructs, room additions, office space, work areas, cabinets and counters.

• Builds foundation forms and frames structures.

• Finish work such as installing windows and doors, trimming, and installing locks and hardware.

• Order supplies and maintains inventory of materials.

5% Estimating:

• Labor and material requirements for carpentry work.

• Provide designs and construction documents for small projects, including as built drawings for Design & Construction to add to the record of drawings that are maintained.

• During the course of subcontracted or maintenance contract work, reviews the project on a regular basis to keep it on schedule and ensure that the established budget is being followed, and recommends/implements any necessary remedial action items.

5% Other Duties as Assigned

• Works within safety rules of OSU and Facilities Services.

• Actively participates in the accident prevention program including attending safety meetings, first aid and safety training programs.

• Safely operate a University vehicle in performing duties.

• Actively participates in quality review processes is an integral part of all Facilities Services positions. This includes interviewing selected customers as needed.

• exercise good customer service communication skills, as appropriate, on every job, keeping the customer and/or requestor informed of every job’s progress through completion, and using door hangers or other notification devices where appropriate.

• Actively participates in orientation, cross orientation, and committee activities as required.

• Any administrative responsibilities include, but are not limited to becoming familiar with all construction standards, standard operating procedures, policies and practices set forth for Facilities Services, follow all business rules, standard operating procedures, and administrative practices for work management duties using the current CMMS system.

• This position supports essential functions of campus operations and the incumbent may be expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency and other University work curtailments or closures. The incumbent will be contacted by their direct supervisor or unit leadership daily for extended University delays or closures to determine if they are required to report to work.

• Other duties as assigned.

What You Will Need

• Strong communications and customer service skills; high attention to detail and the ability to coordinate projects and schedules.

• This position will often be required to lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

• This position is required to work in and have access to all buildings at OSU, using a master key.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

• Previous experience in an institutional or educational setting.

• Roof repair experience.

• Knowledge and proficiency in finish woodworking.

• Experience with commercial door and window hardware.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

• Working Schedule is 6:00 AM-4:30 PM Tuesday through Friday.

• May work outdoors during inclement weather.

• Works around machinery, rotating equipment, sharp blades.

• Requires bending stooping, squatting or standing.

• Exposure to inclement weather, mechanical equipment, and noise, and working at heights or in confined spaces may be necessary.

• This position uses a university vehicle in the performance of duties.

• This position is deemed essential, and the incumbent may be expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency and other University work curtailments or closures

• The employee in this position will often be required to lift or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and pushing or pulling carts weighing up to 50 pounds.
