Latina Republic Reporting for Change Internship - Environmental Correspondent

Organization: Latina Republic

Location: Remote

Type: Rich in professional development, unpaid internship

Duration: Three Months

Environmental Correspondent Latin America & the Caribbean

Environmental rights profoundly impact a wide variety of human rights, including self-determination, food, water, health, sanitation, housing, cultural, civil, and political rights. Your articles will highlight these complexities in Latin America.

Latina Republic is seeking writers to feature articles, interviews, and reports on conservation efforts, rainforests, oceans, animals, and deforestation in Latin America. Throughout the region, green groups face numerous challenges. Environmental NGOs and indigenous communities experience marginalization, restrictions, and increasing penalties for protestors.

Our environmental writers will illuminate stories about Latin American conservation efforts, local leaders, and the importance of healthy forests, protected oceans, sustainable agriculture, clean water, robust climate action, preserved biodiversity, and resilient communities. You will explore the connection between climate change and mass migration, as well as the displacement of agricultural workers.

Our writers will delve into policies aimed at balancing conservation with economic activity, promoting sustainable resources and development efforts. You will cover indigenous communities and territorial governance, coastal and marine initiatives, water and forest policies, and communities' efforts to secure their rights, conserve forests, and improve livelihoods.

Your articles will include interviews and studies examining the forests, water, wildlife, agriculture, and ecosystems of each Latin American and Caribbean country. In dialogue with environmental NGOs and leaders, you'll explore local innovative solutions and proposals to protect Latin American and Caribbean ecosystems, environmental activists, and land defenders.

You may explore extractive activities and territories, the connection between gender and environmental activism, and environmental defense in urban areas. You may also cover multi-country alliances in Latin America aimed at protecting the environment.

Bilingual abilities in Spanish, Portuguese, or Creole are a strength for this role. To apply, please submit a cover letter explaining your interest in the region and the types of environmental topics that interest you in the region.

Submit a resume, a cover letter describing your interest in the internship, and a writing sample.
