Assistant Camp Director

Job Title: Assistant Camp Director

Location: Camp Northwoods Girl Scout Camp

Reports to: Camp Director

This position involves living on site at camp for the summer with food and housing provided. 

Position Purpose:

To further the mission of Camp by assisting the Camp Director in the development and management of program, staffing, financial, and strategic operations.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist in the design, delivery, and evaluation of camp program that meets the needs and interests of the camps target populations and ensure their delivery in a safe and quality manner. 
  • Remain current with information on the developmental needs of youth.
  • Seek and analyze input from youth, families, and staff regarding the quality, safety, and enjoyment of the program and staff.
  • Aid in the implementation of crisis and risk management procedures.
  • Facilitate the design, and ensure delivery of, programs and activities appropriate to the camper population.
  • Ensure all campers, especially members from underserved and historically marginalized communities feel supported and affirmed as they experience camp with us.
  • Assist in the implementation of human resource practices to recruit and retain seasonal staff.
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate seasonal staff.
  • Communicate with appropriate staff to facilitate property management and maintenance needs to ensure stewardship of current program resources and identification of future needs.
  • Assist the director to oversee the daily operation of the summer resident camp including food service, program, business, camper and staff supervision, and health care. 
    • Oversee specific areas as assigned by the director to ensure overall excellence and quality as well as ACA, local and state guidelines, laws, etc are followed
    • Work to ensure quality program in all areas of the camp operation. 
  • Function as acting Camp Director when the Director is off-site.
  • Any and all duties as assigned by the CampDirector.

 

Other Job Duties:

  1. Fulfill assignments and duties assigned as a member of a leadership team.
  2. Participate in camp programming as assigned
  3. Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as outlined by camp policy.  This encompasses activities including but not limited to; daily check-ins, weekly meetings, all staff meetings, mid and end of summer evaluations and parent letters.
  4. Contact parents/families about camper issues as assigned. Act as a liaison between families, camp staff, Girl Scout council staff, and different program areas of camp. 

Equipment Used:

  1. Computer with Microsoft Office software 
  2. Camp Vehicles to include trucks, vans, golf carts, rangers, etc.  
  3. Camp program supplies.

Qualifications:

  1. 21 years of age or older
  2. Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR.
  3. Must submit health history record and examination form prior to first day of work.
  4. Ability to effectively interact with all people of all ages.
  5. Experience as both a camp staff member and a supervisor.
  6. Passionate about delivering an inclusive Girl Scout experience
  7. Preferred: ability to complete the Girl Scouts safe driving program and become qualified to drive camp vehicles.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Ability to work within a budget and purchase supplies efficiently.
  2. Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner.
  3. Ability to live in the rustic, communal setting of summer camp with campers and staff of all ages.
  4. Ability to work with all people without regard to race, age, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or social, ethnic and economic background.
  5. Ability to conduct all activities with a high degree of cultural competency.

Physical Requirements: Essential 

  1. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  2. Ability to safely and properly operate camp equipment, including the camp vehicles.
  3. Ability to utilize a computer and other office equipment.
  4. Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  5. Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  6. Ability to observe staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate management techniques.
  7. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities.
  8. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers & staff.
