Job Title:  Health Care Director

Job Location: Camp Northwoods Girl Scout camp

Reports to:  Camp Director

This position could live on-site at camp (weekly salary with food and housing provided) or off-site with a 40 hours per week schedule. 

Position Purpose: 

The Health Care Director is responsible for overseeing the health and safety of campers and staff as well as the safety and cleanliness of all areas of camp. 

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide health care to meet individual needs of camp staff and campers.
    • Record and distribute medications to campers and staff
    • Ensure all campers, especially members from underserved and historically marginalized communities feel supported and affirmed as they experience camp with us.
    • Follow health care policies/procedures as described in the Healthcare Manual and treatment
  • Contact emergency personnel as needed for health care
  • Organize, maintain, and utilize adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of the campers and staff.
    • Clean, organize and maintain the camp Health Center.
    • Inventory and order all necessary medical supplies and equipment per the treatment procedures
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records according to state and American Camp Association Standards.
    • Ensure staff and camper health history forms are current and on file.
    • Prepare and utilize daily medical log for treatment and medications.
    • Assist in the preparation of accident report forms and ensure all incident/accident forms are submitted within required timeline
  • Oversee First Aid procedures and supplies.
    • Prepare and distribute first aid kits throughout camp including camp vehicles, kitchen, offices, waterfront, activity areas, and for out-of-camp trips.
    • Restock first aid kits throughout the summer to ensure adequate supply at all times
  • Deliver staff orientation session on health care practices
    • Ensure camp staff knows their role related to health care and first aid.
  • Screen all campers and staff who are arriving and departing camp.
    • Verify health history, emergency contacts, and permission to treat.
    • Identify any observable evidence of illness or communicable diseases.
    • Collect and record dosage of all medications used by campers and staff.
  • Oversee health and sanitation throughout camp.
    • complete daily checks of all areas including food service, cabins, latrines and program areas
    • Report any safety issues immediately to the camp director or designee
    • Report any health problems or symptoms of illness to the Camp Director.
  • Any and all duties as assigned by CampDirector.

Other Job Duties:

  1. Fulfill assignments and duties assigned as a member of a leadership team.
  2. Participate in camp programming as assigned
  3. Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as outlined by camp policy.  This encompasses activities including but not limited to; daily check-ins, weekly meetings, all staff meetings, mid and end of summer evaluations and parent letters.
  4. Provide leadership in the camp’s risk management program.
  5. Communicate to director and any health concerns and with direction communicate directly with parents concerning the status of their child’s health.
  6. Be knowledgeable of outside health resources.
  7. Evaluate medical services.

Equipment Used:

  1. Computer and phone
  2. CPR masks, basic first aid supplies, AED

Qualifications:

  1. RN, EMT, or advanced first aid certification.
  2. Experience in first aid and emergency management.
  3. Experience in both children and adult illness/injury care.
  4. Desire to work with children and young adults.
  5. Community health knowledge.
  6. 21 years of age preferred.
  7. Must submit health history record and examination form prior to first day of work.
  8. Ability to effectively interact with all people of all ages
  9. Ability to complete the Girl Scouts safe driving program and become qualified to drive camp vehicles preferred.
  10. Passionate about delivering an inclusive Girl Scout experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of common food born illnesses and allergies.
  2. Ability to identify and remove ticks, lice, and other “undesirables”.
  3. Ability to work within a budget and purchase supplies efficiently.
  4. Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner.
  5. Previous camp experience preferred
  6. Previous health work experience preferred
  7. Ability to live in the rustic, communal setting of summer camp with campers and staff of all ages.
  8. Ability to work with all people without regard to race, age, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or social, ethnic and economic background.
  9. Ability to conduct all activities with a high degree of cultural competency.

 

Physical Aspects of the Job: Essential

  1. Ability to lift/assist campers and staff.
  2. Ability to read and follow directions on medication labels, health forms, physician orders, and parent letters.
  3. Ability to use a telephone.
  4. Maintain written record system.
  5. Ability to quickly get to remote locations on camp property over uneven terrain.
  6. Observe and assess sanitation and safety conditions of the camp.
  7. Ability to communicate with parents, staff, and administration about camper health concerns.
  8. Possess endurance to meet emergency needs.
