We specialize in water resources management through applied research, technology innovation, policy development, and adaptive monitoring. We use these approaches to solve vexing ecological and water quality disruptions to protect and restore surface waters in the Great Lakes region and across the globe. We are seeking motivated professionals for entry-level positions to join our Lakes-Watersheds-Wetlands team in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This team focuses on lake and wetland ecology, water quality, and watershed management projects in Michigan and the Great Lakes region.

The Project Scientist IV position requires a highly motivated professional, principled in science and/or environmental engineering, possessing excellent organizational, quantitative, problem-solving, written and oral skills. The Project Scientist will be considered a full-time, salaried professional with standard benefits including vacation, holiday and paid sick time, health insurance, and compensation for hours beyond 40/week for field work. Simple IRA participation and long-term disability insurance become available at the one-year employment milestone. Successful Project Scientist candidates will possess field monitoring experience. They will also receive advanced training by experienced professionals to serve on and eventually lead K&A monitoring and assessment projects. Sampling and monitoring of surface waters, stormwater and groundwater will occupy a substantial portion of the project scientist’s responsibilities in non-winter months, with some winter sampling. Lake monitoring will include water quality sampling, sediment sampling, ecological documentation of aquatic plant community composition, AIS identification and fisheries habitat. Data collection will involve use of meters, field tools, iPads, automated sampling equipment, and small boat operation. Qualified candidates must be comfortable working in challenging natural environments within the Great Lakes region including lakes and wetlands, as well as sampling from boats and in waders.

The Project Scientist IV position will include travel to periodically conduct field work, and in many cases, with other K&A staff as related to project needs. The ability to work within a project team and individually is essential for this position. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of water resource projects.

As with all K&A employees, the professional will be expected to be able to perform an array of office and technical duties necessary to complete project and company assignments. Opportunities for training, conference participation and presentations are considered integral to professional growth. Support of further educational advancement through K&A sponsorship will be available.

Applicants should be expected to start immediately, but not later than mid-May, 2023. These positions require residency in the Kalamazoo area as field work will be performed from this office location. Flexibility for some remote work during the off-season from field work may be considered.
