Archeology Technician

Title: ALCC National Park Service Southeast Parks Group Archeology Technician

Stipend: $550.00 weekly living stipend + $100.00 housing stipend (shared housing available at no additional cost) 

Term: 40 weeks, Full time (40 hrs/week)

Reports To:  National Park Service, Southeast Utah Parks Group (Arches NP, Canyonlands NP, Hovenweep NM, and Natural Bridges NM)

Location: 2282 Resource Blvd, Moab Utah 84532

Status:  1200-hour AmeriCorps Service Term 

Benefits: Health Insurance Coverage while in service and upon completion of term $5,176.50 Education Award.

 

Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps’ Mission 

It is the mission of the Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps to lead our nations back to cultural and ecological well-being. The Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps has local program offices in Acoma Pueblo, Isleta Pueblo, Gallup NM (Navajo Nation), Zuni Pueblo, and Hopi Tribe. ALCC also serves young adults across the country through its Individual Placements Program.

The National Park Service (NPS) is entrusted with the management of lands and waters that have been and remain ancestral homelands of Indigenous Tribes, who have lived on and cared for these places since time immemorial. The mission of the Cultural Resources Program at the Southeast Utah Parks Group is to understand, protect, and preserve, cultural resources for the enjoyment and preservation of our shared human heritage.

 

ALCC National Park Service Southeast Parks Group Archeology Technician Overview:

Individual Placements will engage in a diverse range of archeological fieldwork activities, learning about North American Southwest archeology and contemporary research methodologies.

 Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Site Documentation and/or Monitoring: Mapping, photographing, and describing archaeological features to document and assess their conditions.
  • Cyclic Site Visit Activities: Engaging in repeat photography and using photogrammetric modeling (creating 3D models from photographs) for effective change detection.
  • Assist with Historic Preservation Projects: Work with supervisor and other program archeologist(s) on structural preservation projects. Learn and practice varied aspects of preservation and structural stabilization activities including post-stabilization documentation.
  • Field Data Collection: Involves pedestrian surveys (extensive walking to identify archeological surface deposits), hiking, and/or driving on 4x4 roads to access various sites.
  • In-office Processing and Data Entry: The incumbent will manage field notes and complete field paperwork. They will also conduct literature reviews, records searches, and work with databases, including Excel spreadsheets and Microsoft Access. Additionally, the incumbent will process data from the field and learn how to create 3D models (National Park Service - Southeast Utah Group (@SEUG) - Sketchfab) using photogrammetry software.

 

Required Skills and Qualifications:  

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with limited supervision after the initial training period.
  • Maneuver and operate in a mixture of office and field work. This can include long periods of standing or walking on rough, uneven ground, bending, crouching, and stooping.
  • Ability to work safely and productively in outdoor work settings, including under adverse conditions. This will include working outside in high temperatures an inclement weather.
  • Able to complete duties that include bending, lifting, climbing, reaching, standing for extended periods of time, loading and unloading material.
  • Completed High School or Equivalent
  • Comfort with computers and troubleshooting skills with an interest in learning new software.
  • Able to use effectively and safely use hand tools, hand power tools, and to safely operate motor vehicles.
  • Ability to work effectively on a team to complete project.

 Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in Archeology, Anthropology, or a directly related field.
  • Completion of an archeological field school or similar level of volunteer/internship/work experience including field work experience of excavation and/or pedestrian survey.
