Day Camp Counselor

Pay Range: Starting at $13.00 an hour (depending on experience)

Position Summary:

As a Day Camp Counselor, you’ll wake up each morning with one mission – To make it the best summer ever for each camper in your care! With support from the branch leadership team and your fellow Counselors, you’ll lead groups and provide fun and safe experiences for children. You will help our Y campers gain a feeling of high self-esteem, self-worth, and comfort so they can assert their interests and expand their ideas and knowledge. As a Day Camp Counselor, every day will be an opportunity for fun, growth, and learning.

 

A Day in the Life of a Day Camp Counselor:

You’ll help create a fun and supportive environment for Y campers –

Be an active and enthusiastic leader and teacher and act as a role model to campers

Follow the weekly-prepared schedule to ensure that all campers have a chance to participate in all activities

Fill free time with appropriate activities for the group, including participating and leading songs, games and other activities

Help to lead daily opening and closing ceremonies

You’ll prioritize the needs and safety of Y campers at all times –

Ensure safe and risk free environment at all times while meeting the individual needs of the campers 

Exhibit good judgment and enthusiasm for the activities and strong awareness of safety to maintain the general health, happiness and safety of the campers

You’ll utilize and develop your administrative and communication skills –

Greet parents daily and keep them informed and engaged through camper recognition or notes about camp experiences

Keep Camp Coordinator informed of all relevant info, ensuring all required reporting is completed on time and accurately

 

Qualifications

What does it take to be a Day Camp Counselor?

To be successful as a Day Camp Counselor, you’ll have passion, enthusiasm, commitment, and understanding of the nonprofit mission and cause of the YMCA.

You must have an interest in working with children in a camp setting and the desire to be a positive influence on children.

You’ll have the ability to work outdoors for up to 9-hours per day and be able to move freely and quickly through the building and outdoor site.

You’ll need strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

Must present a professional image and possess conflict resolution skills, and demonstrate sound judgment and initiative

Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, and weekends

Minimum 18 years of age

Previous experience or coursework in working with children and/or recreation preferred

 

Certifications Required:

Your success is important to us! The YMCA of Middle Tennessee will provide each of the following trainings/certifications –

Before start of 1st shift: New Hire Orientation training

Within 30 days of hire: CPR Pro/ First Aid/ AED

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand; walk on uneven surfaces; sit; handle or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must be able to lift up to 45 pounds. The employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level is usually minimal to moderate.
