Day Camp Counselor

The Day Camp Counselor is responsible for the overall day- to-day group programming, discipline, direct supervision and management of children in the Summer Camp Program. Must be able to relate to school age children (ages 6-12), and conduct age appropriate activities.

Essential Job Functions

  • Acts as a role model to the children by exemplifying the City of Royal Oak’s Code of Conduct.
  • Supervise a group of children between the ages of 6-12.
  • Facilitate both formal and informal play activities.
  • Plans, organizes, and implements a daily schedule of the activities, including crafts, sports, wellness, games, music, drama and field trips, etc.
  • Assists with the set-up and breakdown of activities and cleaning of program areas.
  • Maintains positive and appropriate relations with children, parents, staff, etc.
  • Provides emergency response as per training when necessary.
  • Provides exceptional customer service, be enthusiastic and create a safe and fun place for the community.
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, and enforce safety regulations.
  • Provides emergency response when necessary.

Physical Requirements

  • Perform essential program support to camp activities and programs which may include, but not limited to the following activities: semi – reaching to full-reach overhead, crouching, kneeling, shoveling, working in narrow and/or confining spaces underground, overhead, and at ground level, twisting of the waist, shoulders, and legs, and lying on stomach and/or back.
  • Must have the ability to physically manage and support children when needed for safety in general camp activities (child weighing 50 - 200 pounds).
  • Ability to perform a variety of tasks both indoors and outdoors in different climates.



Additional Information

Hours: 7 AM - 6 PM 
Season: June - August
Pay Rate: $16/hour
