Conservation Education Internship

The Potter Park Zoo Education Department is offering a limited number of stipend full-time Conservation Education internships for Summer 2024. The Conservation Education Internship provides a practical learning experience and knowledge of informal conservation education in a zoological setting.  

 

Duties and tasks may include but are not limited to: 

  1. Developing programs and/or activities under the guidance of education department staff, to be implemented by interns, staff, and volunteers for conservation education on-grounds. 
  2. Assist in the daily operation of the Education Department including program creation, contributing to on-going projects, cataloguing, event set-up/clean-up, program delivery, and other duties as assigned. 
  3. Assist with interdepartmental events and projects (primarily with Event and Fund Development departments), including, but not limited to, Zookambi Summer Camp, conservation events, Zoo Nights and Zoo Days, and DEAI initiatives such as FALCONERS and Zoo in Your Neighborhood.
  4. Develop and implement conservation education messaging in the form of education stations, and other on-grounds activities or lessons.
  5. Participate in on-grounds education throughout the Zoo including education stations, tours, and public events.
  6. Complete relevant online and in-person training programs and certifications.  
  7. Please Note: Education, hospitality and media & design interns do not participate in animal husbandry, nor do they have contact with animals.  

 

Requirements 

  1. Currently pursuing or recently graduated with a degree in zoology, biology, education, environmental education, conservation science or a related field preferred. 
  2. Junior/Senior college level students preferred.  Relevant experience will be considered if not pursuing a degree. 
  3. Must enjoy working with people of all ages, ethnicities, race, gender, and backgrounds.
  4. Must have an interest in engaging members of the public in conservation education opportunities and place-based learning. 
  5. Must be self-motivated, energetic, adaptable, and able to work as part of a team. 
  6. Must pass a background check. 

 

Further Comments 

  1. Hours will generally be during the week. There will be some required weekend and evening events/programs.
  2. This internship is supported by a stipend. College credit is available; the intern is responsible for obtaining the necessary paperwork and approval from their university.
