Description

 

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office is seeking to fill experienced Attorney positions in the Appeals unit within the Criminal Division. These positions will represent the State in all manner of criminal appellate work in Minnesota’s state appellate courts.

Current Hennepin County employees who refer a candidate hired into an open competitive position may be eligible for a $500 referral bonus. For more information visit employee referral program.

Location and hours:
These positions are hybrid and will be performed both on-site at Hennepin County Government Center at 300 South 6th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55487 and remote as job duties require. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, with typical hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. While these positions are designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota and Wisconsin.

New employees who are hired into remote or hybrid positions between January 2, 2022 to December 31, 2024, will receive $500 toward the cost of establishing consistent internet connectivity, payable upon completion of 6 months of employment.

Criminal background checks: Applicants with convictions are not automatically disqualified. Each case is considered on its individual circumstances and the type of work.

In these positions, depending on assignment, you will:    
 

  • Represent the State in all manner of criminal appellate work in Minnesota’s state appellate courts (i.e., direct appeals, sentencing-and-probation-revocation appeals, state’s appeals, extraordinary writs, petitions for review). This includes both brief writing and oral arguments.
  • Handle the responsive filings to habeas-corpus petitions that are filed in federal district court.
  • Respond to questions for advice from trial attorneys in multiple criminal divisions regarding issues that arise in cases that are still pending in district court or juvenile court.
  • Prepare briefs, opinions, pleadings, and other legal papers; confer with attorneys, other county employees and other interested parties regarding criminal prosecutions appeals.
  • Conduct necessary legal research; keep case records and make reports; perform necessary research, work investigations, and preparation of briefs for the trial of cases involving criminal prosecution appeals.


Need to have:
 

  • Admission to the Bar of the State of Minnesota and two years or more of experience as a practicing attorney.

Nice to have:    
 

  • Experience working in a Public Law Office.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Local laws and ordinances, established precedents, and legal reference sources.
    • The principles, methods, and practices of legal research and investigation.
    • Judicial procedures and the rules of evidence.
    • The pleading and practice of effective presentation of court cases.
  • Abilities:
    • Provide excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and persuasive public speaking skills.
    • Charge criminal cases.
    • Try cases independently.
    • Establish effective working relationships and to collaborate with other county departments.
