Automotive Mechanic Assistant

Characteristics of the Class

Under the general direction of the Airport Foreman/Airport Mechanic, incumbent will perform semi-skilled mechanical work of average difficulty and responsibility related to the maintenance and repair of automotive and related mechanical equipment. Must possess knowledge and skills to perform tasks including general repair, maintenance and service of automotive and related equipment. 

 

Essential Functions

  • Assists with repairs and reconditions, performs preventative maintenance and service work on automotive and related equipment. 
  • Maintains and repairs various equipment, up to and including, but not limited to, universal joints, motor mounts, tune-ups and systems repairs (cooling brakes)
  • Identify replacement parts using manuals and other reference materials. 
  • Performs diagnostics on vehicles and equipment using electronic tools.
  • Assists in completing in necessary body repairs and paintwork on vehicles and equipment. 
  • Performs emergency repairs in the field as necessary. 
  • Assists in internet search for equipment related parts, availability and repair techniques.
  • Maintains records and reports, requests parts and materials, and requisition tools and equipment as required for the efficient performance as assigned work.
  • Inputs information into computer database. 
  • Drive vehicles and equipment on airport ramps, taxiways, aircraft parking areas, and safety areas. 
  • Must communicate and follow radio directions from the control tower. 
  • Performs fuel spills clean ups to protect the environment. 
  • Escort contractors and vendors on Air Operations Area (AOA), as needed. 
  • Assists airport staff during special events and emergencies involving aircraft or vehicle accidents, incidents, and severe weather conditions. 

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Two (2) years' work experience in automotive repair/service work
  • Must have and maintain a State of Florida Driver's License
  • Must be able to pass Federal fingerprint-based criminal background check 
  • Must attend FAA Security Standards Class and successfully pass a test with a minimum score of 70

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of mechanical repair methods/procedures.
  • Knowledge of automotive repair methods/procedures.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. 
  • Ability to drive and work in a fast-paced maintenance environment. 
  • Ability to diagnose, locate, define, adjust, and/or repair defects in vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to make necessary repairs within industry standard time limits. 
  • Ability to use senses (smell, touch, sight, and hearing) as aids in the evaluation and troubleshooting of malfunctioning equipment. 
  • Ability to maintain accurate and complete work order records and to concisely record time, parts, and other pertinent information. 
  • Ability to operate a drill press, parts cleaning machine, cut-off saw, various electric, gas and pneumatic tools, oxy/acetylene torch and arc welder. 
  • Ability to use small hand tools which require the use of hands, wrist, and fingers. 
  • Ability to lift large pieces of equipment up to and including 75 pounds. 
  • Ability to work in dimly lit conditions and in all weather conditions. 
  • Ability to work in undesirable conditions such as dust, dirt, fumes, odors, excessive noise, wetness, humidity, chemicals, welding flash, heat, cold, and other unpleasant conditions. 
  • Ability to sit, walk, bend, stoop, crawl, kneel, stand for prolonged periods, up to 8 hours.
  • Ability to walk and work on unstable surfaces.
  • Ability to safely climb ladders and stairs. 
  • Ability to work various shifts as assigned. 
  • Ability to speak, read, and write fluent English.
  • Ability to understand written and oral directions. 
  • Ability to accept verbal and/or written direction.
  • Ability to operate independently and within a team environment. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, airport tenants, and vendors. 
  • Ability to learn two-way radio communication skills utilizing aviation radio procedures and use of phonetic alphabet. 
  • Ability to learn, understand, and remember normal tasks. 
  • Ability to hear, speak, and understand conversation in English in a normal tone of voice.
  • Ability to see and read words, letters, numbers, characters, or symbols and identify colors.
  • Ability to work within established timelines.
