Big Shoulders Fund - Who are we?

Our mission is simple: We provide support to schools with demonstrated need to best serve students in Chicago and Northwest Indiana communities. Big Shoulders Fund is a non-profit charity that supports students, teachers, and school leaders in over nearly 100 elementary and high schools in Chicago and Northwest Indiana. 

For early career teachers especially, we provide:

  • Stipend opportunities and peer collaboration and networking
  • Personalized leadership pathways
  • Tuition Assistance for higher degrees, endorsements, or licenses


Position Overview

A teacher in a Big Shoulders Fund classroom is committed to providing all students with access to a high-quality, values-based education. Strong candidates will cherish the warmth of the school community and utilize the supports offered by Big Shoulders. 

All teachers will be hired and employed by the Archdiocese of Chicago with support from the Big Shoulders Fund. 

Essential Job Functions

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active, differentiated
  • Use relevant tools and strategies, including technology, to meet the needs of all students.
  • Manage student behavior by establishing a strong classroom culture that integrates safe and equitable structures, procedures, and routines to create a positive, safe, and nurturing environment in accordance with the school rules and systems.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records.
  • Observe and evaluate student performance and development through formative and summative assessments that are in alignment with curricular materials and overarching standards.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to enhance the instructional environment and work towards common school goals.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to master the craft of teaching.
  • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic, and ability backgrounds
  • Encourage parent and community involvement; obtain information for parents when requested, and promptly return phone calls and answer emails
  • Participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs, and student organizations, as directed

Additional Expectations

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Required)
  • Professional Educator License awarded by the state of Illinois, or ISBE approved out-of-state license to teach (Preferred)

(NOTE: Illinois state certification in specific endorsement area is preferred, but non-licensed candidates may be considered if they are currently pursuing or open to working towards licensure)

  • Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties. Some participation and attendance at school-sponsored events and meetings is required.
