Mechanical Engineering Co-Op - Fall 2024

JOB SUMMARY:

A mentorship experience that gives students an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to a new product development and manufacturing environment. This co-op will gain practical experience to develop engineering judgment, with increasing independent control over design decisions, processes, adaptations, and/or modifications.  Functions may include, but not limited to, performing tests, process changes using 3D modeling and Oracle, gathering and preparing data, and giving presentations. Depending on experience level, they will be given opportunities to lead their own projects.

ESSENTIAL/PRIMARY DUTIES:

Mechanical Engineering

• Design and analyze complex parts and assemblies to applicable standards.

• Make decisions and provide technical data for decisions that impact compliance with design specifications.

• Intensely involved in all phases of the design from analysis, testing, and qualification for production and sale to the public.

• Collaborate on project teams, lead project teams, and direct activities of team members.

• Create documents related to the design engineering function.  Documentation of layout drawings, detail drawings, assembly drawings, Bill of Materials, Engineering Change Orders, and design records.

• Work to ensure that the design complies with all specified regulatory agencies. 

• Develop product and component test specifications.  Actively participate as a team member to acquire detailed product and user knowledge.

 

Manufacturing Engineering

• Conduct research in an effort to improve manufacturing processes and/or product design.

• Gain an understanding of the plant, processes, and equipment by working with a diverse group of functional areas on cost, quality, lead time and safety improvements.

• Manage the people, the process, and the product aspects of a problem to implement a solution.

• Analyze and plan workspace requirements, workflow, and layout of equipment for maximum efficiency.

• Technical writing of standardized work instructions.

• Assist in the design and analysis of complex parts and assemblies to meet applicable standards.

• Assist in providing technical data for decisions that impact compliance with design specifications.

• Participate on cross-functional teams.

• Daily tasks to include: attend meetings, project activities, problem analysis, and technical reports, troubleshoot manufacturing or quality problems, and communicate with internal and external customers.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES:

• Complete engineering change orders.

• Write test protocols and reports.

• Use a variety of software toolsets, such as 3D modeling, Microsoft Office

• Conduct report-outs and formal presentations on work conducted

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Enrollment in a 4-year accredited degree program, working towards a BS in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Electrical, Software Engineering or other applicable degree.

COMPETENCY/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

• Must possess working knowledge and experience with design of experiments, problem solving, Excel and 3D Modeling.

• Ability to relate technical knowledge to job-related duties.

• Demonstrated ability to solve problems and make decisions independently.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
