Horticulture & Landscape Intern

Department:  Gardening

Reports To:  Director of Gardening and Horticulture

Salary:  $15.00 per hour, commensurate with experience

 

The Horticulture/ Landscape Internship is designed to offer a hands-on experience for an individual interested in a career in horticulture, public gardens, and landscape architecture/design. This intern will work with the Lakeside Chautauqua Gardening Staff and is responsible for all phases of public garden maintenance and development: weeding, watering, mowing, mulching, pruning and interacting with guests of Lakeside Chautauqua. This individual will be involved in a special project consisting of identifying a specific area or bed that requires rejuvenation or renewal, designing and creating the process, acquiring the product to be utilized and implementing the work needed.

 

The ideal candidate is an undergraduate or recent college graduate majoring in horticulture, public gardening or landscape architecture/design. Ability to prioritize, multi-task and work independently is essential.

 

Duties and responsibilities (plus other duties as assigned):

 

Take part in the everyday maintenance involved in Lakeside's public gardens including watering, weeding, mowing, trimming, pruning, leaf blowing and raking

 

Assist in the care and maintenance of Chautauqua Park, Lakeside's Prairie Garden and Ohio's Most Beautiful Mile

 

Develop solutions to target erosion areas

 

Work with the staff on improving watering practices including irrigation systems

 

Assist in the creation and design of new plant beds and projects, including native plants and naturalized gardens

 

Assist in lawn rejuvenation and any hardscape construction

 

Install plant identification signage

 

Develop a map of public gardens to enable self- guided walks

 

Participate in all Lakeside Leadership Academy activities, forums and gatherings

 

Make an oral presentation to the Lakeside Chautauqua staff regarding summer internship experience

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; stoop, climb or balance. Specific vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus are required. Must be able to lift heavy equipment and material up to 50 pounds with assistance. Must be able to climb ladders.
