GEA Residential Assistant (RA)

The Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD) is seeking to hire an enthusiastic, energetic, mature and responsible Engineering Resident Assistant to support the instructional and learning needs for middle school students in the Girls in Engineering Academy (GEA). ESD is looking for resident assistants who will enjoy working with young, minority girls to be the next generation of engineers. One lead resident assistants will also be selected to oversee university and student schedules and programming to make sure the daily activities go smoothly. The lead resident assistant would be the primary contact for any problem resolutions or for program questions.

The ideal applicant will work under the supervision of the GEA Program Manager/Director providing additional assistance and direction to students. The Resident Assistant is expected to assist in planning and organizing after class activities and during the evening hours in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. The resident assistant will also spend the night on campus with the young ladies each Sunday through Wednesday night.

The purpose of the Girls in Engineering Academy is to introduce middle school students to the field of engineering through an exploration of different concepts and information. GEA is also a program designed to ameliorate the gender gap in engineering and in engineering education. By using principles and methods of design and analysis, at an elementary level, students will be engaged through group work and project-based learning in research and teaching labs. The students will be encouraged to think creatively throughout this hands-on experience.

Essential Responsibilities:

·      Intentional focus on student achievement and positive behaviors and attitudes.

·      Monitor the dorms and identify students who may be struggling to adjust to dorm life

·      Identify students who may be struggling with class assignments and assist students who need additional help.

·      Help to organize after class activities that promotes sisterhood and bonding.

·      Maintain daily attendance of student participants.

·      Build and maintain positive relationships with students and instructional teams.

·      Supervise students in the dorms, during breakfast and dinner periods, during after class activities and at the start and end of each program day.

·      Communicate effectively with students, families and staff.

·      Work outside the normal schedule periodically in collaboration with colleagues when necessary.

·      Maintain consistent order and discipline with the students.

·      RAs will reside in the dorms.

 

 

Academic Qualifications:

Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field is required; (Freshman or Sophomore level, undergraduate status required).

Experience working with K-12 students is preferred, but not required.

Strong commitment and desire to work with underrepresented youth and staff in a collaborative environment.

Life-long learner, optimistic, flexible, and passionate about helping all students reach their potential.

Open to change and possess skills that promote student achievement and growth.

Exceptional interpersonal skills.

 

Other Qualifications:

Must pass a criminal background check.

Must pass a drug screening test.

Provide proof of U.S. citizenship status and/or Lawful Permanent Resident.

Must have a valid (Michigan) driver’s license.

Must have reliable personal transportation to travel to teaching location.

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Professional in communication, appearance and deportment.

Be able to work four weeks beginning June thru August 2024.

Be able to lift or move boxes weighing up to 25 pounds.

Must attend mandatory staff meetings
