Prevention Education Intern

S.A.F.E. Place Position Description

TITLE: Prevention Education Intern

PAY RANGE: N/A

STATUS: Temporary, Non-Exempt, Hourly, Part-time (10-15 hours per week)

HOURS OF WORK: Flexible schedule based on agency need, potentially including some evenings & weekend events.

SUPERVISOR: S.A.F.E Place Prevention Educator

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Position may require travel and use of own vehicle. Mileage will be reimbursed at the rate specified in the Employee Handbook. 

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Prevention Education Intern is responsible for assisting the Prevention Educator execute a comprehensive project to increase school-based prevention education and victim service utilization for K-12th grade students on the subjects of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The project seeks to facilitate trainings for parents and adults at youth-serving organizations on the same subjects and to inspect and transform policies dealing with these types of violence with the help of a Coordinated Community Response Team (CCRT) of allied professionals who help facilitate reaching these goals. 

 

KEY DUTIES

  • Help provide age-appropriate presentations to school-age children on dating violence, healthy relationships, body safety, and related topics.
  • Assist creating social-emotional learning activities for students.
  • Administer pre- and post-surveys to students receiving prevention education.
  • Assist with school scheduling.
  • Help provide workshops for educators and other community members at youth serving organizations on identifying and responding to children who have been exposed and/or have experienced domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and/or stalking.
  • Attend Coordinated Community Response Team meetings.
  • Attend community outreach events and public awareness activities to increase awareness on agency services and volunteer opportunities while representing the agency in a professional manner.
  • Attend weekly program and staff meetings. 
  • All other duties as assigned.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS

  • Enrollment in an Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree program with a focus on human services or social work preferred.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and ability to learn agency database.
  • Ability to work as a team, adaptability, flexibility, and dependability.
  • Understanding and/or ability to learn domestic violence dynamics, investment in the empowerment philosophy, organizational skills, crisis intervention skills, and an ability to access community resources

 

MINIMUM LEARNING OUTCOMES 

  • Learn about and reflect on alternative leadership styles (collective leadership, leadership for social change).
  • Learn and engage in participatory and consensus decision making processes.
  • Explore varying “Models of Change” (intergenerational learning model, social-ecological model of social change, empowerment model, community resilience model, social-emotional learning).
  • Communicate with persons of different cultures or subcultures.
  • Communicate professionally when representing the agency to the community.
  • Receive training on domestic violence dynamics and crisis intervention skills. (40 hours of crisis intervention training).
  • Demonstrate investment in the empowerment philosophy.
  • Build organizational skills and an ability to access community resources. 
  • Job Shadow and training opportunities with Executive Director, Counselor, Legal Advocate, Children’s Advocate, Administrative Staff, and Program Director.
