The Georgia Federal-aid Highway Division is hiring an Environmental Protection Specialist (GS-0028-11/12 - $72,974 to $113,706 annually) in Atlanta, GA. The Georgia Division Office is a team of 29 talented, dedicated professionals who work with the Georgia Department of Transportation, county, and municipal governments to deliver the Federal-aid Highway (Transportation) Program throughout the state.

We add value in the delivery of one of the nation’s best and most complementary transportation systems, with a $15 billion Major Mobility Investment Program of express lanes and a multi-county metro rail system. 


As an Environmental Protection Specialist, you will:

  • Serve as an advisor on FHWA environmental policy, laws, regulations.
  • Advise FHWA stakeholders and Federal and State partner agencies on Federal environmental responsibilities and FHWA regulations, policies, and guidance.
  • Collaborate with and advise stakeholders of special environmental concerns.
  • Conduct program and/or process reviews to ensure that Federal requirements and environmental commitments are achieved.
  • Identify and determine relevant interagency technical/policy issues warranting coordination.
  • Provide technical assistance to resolve program and project-specific issues.

The ideal candidate is a knowledgeable professional with experience implementing environmental laws, regulations, and policy with effective communication skills to represent FHWA to the Georgia Department of Transportation, local transportation partners, Tribal Governments, the public, and federal/state regulatory agencies.


The Georgia Division Office is in downtown Atlanta, with a convenient private entrance to the MARTA Five Points Station and near Underground Atlanta. The office is walking distance to Mercedes-Benz Stadium (home of the Atlanta Falcons and the 2018 MLS champion Atlanta United FC), State Farm Arena (Home of the Atlanta Hawks), the College Football Hall of Fame, Centennial Olympic Park, the world-renowned Georgia Aquarium, the World of Coca-Cola Museum, and many other attractions.

Atlanta is also home to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, one of the world’s busiest, where you can get to any place in the world via non-stop (and inexpensive) flights! Atlanta is home to dozens of Fortune 500 companies, including Coca-Cola, Home Depot, UPS, State Farm, Delta Airlines, SunTrust Bank, Norfolk-Southern, and Mercedes-Benz to name a few. The Centers for Disease Control is one of the few Federal agencies with headquarters outside of Washington, DC, and has been leading the fight against worldwide health crises for decades.
