Position Description
INTERN SALARY - SEE BELOW

Intern Working for an Hourly Rate:

College Student (Freshman or Sophomore) - $13.00/hour

College Student (Junior, Senior, or Technical/Vocational) - $14.00/hour

College Student (Graduate Level) - $15.00/hour

Intern Working for College Credit:

College credit interns are eligible to be paid a stipend commensurate with the range of hours worked during the time required by the college or university to complete the internship program.

21 – 25 hours - $187.50/week

26 – 30 hours - $225.00/week

Unpaid Intern Volunteer:

For those that have completed most courses leading towards their degree and are looking for work experience.

The internship is continuously open for applicants for Fall, Spring, Summer. We are now reviewing applicants for Fall 2024

Learning Outcomes/Objectives:

  • Effective Communication Skills: Students will develop the ability to write and distribute various types of content, including press releases, newsletter articles, and social media posts. Staff will proof and edit until ready for publishing.
  • Content Management: Students will gain proficiency in using the city's content management system through both web and in-person training.
  • Resume Development: Students will receive weekly guidance meetings with staff on how to create and improve their resume and portfolio website.
  • LinkedIn and Online Presence: Staff will guide students on how to improve their LinkedIn profile and monitor their online presence/mentions.
  • Professional Headshot: Staff will teach student about how to take professional headshots and the student will leave internship with a high-quality professional headshot.
  • Collaboration: Students will develop strong collaboration skills by working with graphic designers and other team members to create visually appealing materials and execute communication campaigns effectively.
  • Information Synthesis: Students will learn to synthesize complex information into easily understandable content for employees and the public by taking tours of facilities and interviewing staff.
  • Digital and Social Media Marketing: Students will gain experience in writing copy and uploading digital content for social media platforms. Staff will review content before publishing.
  • Graphic Design and Video Production (Optional): Students with a passion or interest in design and video production can explore and develop skills in these areas alongside staff, as they are considered advantageous for this role.
     

Duties and Responsibilities
• Write and distribute press releases, advertising copy, newsletter articles and social posts and coordinate on all aspects of a communications campaign for assigned topic
• Write and submit content for city website using content management system
• Submit content for established employee communication publications
• Write and submit content for city e-newsletters for assigned campaigns
• Write and produce engaging video content for Youtube channel
• Take photos and videos for website, social channels and to build stock content
• Work with graphic designers to create visually appealing printed materials to supplement communications campaigns
• Be an "editorial eye" that ensures that all written materials are clear and concise
• Collaborate with Public Communications team in all stages of the creative process on key communication initiatives
• Assist with drafting and monitoring Request for Proposal for formal communications work

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university, OR in the process of completing the course work for this degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Organizational Communication, Marketing, Social Media or Public Relations, or related field preferred.
