Capital Improvement Projects Intern-Public Works

Description/Duties & Responsibilities
The City of Santa Clarita is committed to providing a challenging and meaningful work experience for college students. The City offers unique opportunities for students to gain hands-on and in-depth experience in a variety of disciplines related to local, regional, state, and federal government operations. We provide real world work assignments, which provide interns the opportunity to work side-by-side with professional City staff committed to teamwork and providing superior municipal services to the community of Santa Clarita.
This internship will provide the opportunity for students with an educational background in Architecture or Interior Design, to learn firsthand the dynamics of Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) in a local government setting and gain hands-on experience with the City Architect, resident engineers and project managers.
SALARY:
$17.86 – $22.62/hour (Undergraduate Level)
$23.83 – $28.59/hour (Graduate Level)
12-20 hours per week is preferred. Expected duration of this internship is between six to twelve months.
DESCRIPTION/DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist project managers with analysis and monitoring of project budgets and schedules
- Conduct field investigations on various projects, including ADA surveys
- Research techniques, survey methods, and data collection
- Maintain and organize general administrative records
- “As Built” surveys measuring and drawing
- Develop architectural designs
- Work with lead architect to provide design development plans, sketches, 3-D studies, research finishes and other products, develop budgets, coordinate with landscape architects and civil engineers
- Help with minor tenant improvement projects at City-owned properties
- Work with Engineering Services when architectural plans are needed for bidding and permitting
- Work with Building & Safety to submit plans for plan check and permits
Education and Experience
If you are a current undergraduate student, graduate student, or a recent college graduate in the field of architecture or Interior Design and are interested in gaining meaningful, hands-on work experience at the local government level, this may be the program for you.
Knowledge and Abilities
THE FOLLOWING SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES ARE HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
General understanding of governmental organizations and municipal operations
- Excellent oral and written communications
- Flexibility and ability to handle multiple priorities
- Excellent customer service skills
- Basic knowledge of budget/financial analysis and management principles/procedures
- An interest in the federal or state legislative process
- Excellent presentation skills
- Ability to understand plans and specifications
- Computer experience with Office XP and Adobe Acrobat
- Drafting experience with AutoCAD and/or Revit
- 3-D experience using Sketchup
- Ability to foster effective working relationships with all levels of staff and the community
