Senior Veterinary Technician

Job Summary

We are seeking a Sr. Veterinary Technician for our Insourcing Solutions Department located in Cambridge, MA.
Oversees veterinary support within the animal care environments at Charles River Accelerator & Development Labs (CRADL). Provides expertise in clinical laboratory animal medicine, maintains the highest levels animal welfare, manages programmatic functions such as clinical, biosecurity, creation and renewal of policy documents, veterinary supply and client support. Ensures that the health and welfare of laboratory animals are maintained in compliance with local, state, federal and institutional guidelines, and regulations. Responsible for providing guidance and oversight of local Veterinary Technicians in the absence of the Clinical Veterinarian.
The following are responsibilities relate to the Sr. Veterinary Technician:
  • Act as team leader for veterinary and/or training staff, including participating in onboarding of new employees, as well as ongoing mentorship.
  • Monitor animal health and welfare while performing at minimum twice daily animal health and clinical observations. Work up animal health concerns per CRADL SOPs and BOPs.
  • Perform regular clinical observations, review, and follow-up with veterinary team on open health cases. Provide timely triage and treatment to emergency cases.
  • Electronic recordkeeping of clinical observation and treatment with necessary communications with veterinary staff and client researchers.
  • Generate and submit internal and external health trending reports in the required formats and timeframes as assigned.
  • Responsible for tissue sampling, routine animal manipulations (e.g., dosing) and administration of fluids or other treatments as required in the course of veterinary duties.
  • Perform staff technical proficiency or researcher competency assessments as assigned..

Job Qualifications

The following are minimum qualifications related to the SrVeterinary Technician position:
Education:  Associate degree (A.A./A.S.) in animal or laboratory science, adult education, or related field. Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) preferred
Experience:  Minimum of three – four (3 - 4) years of veterinary experience or two (2) years directly related laboratory animal experience in a laboratory animal facility. Experience as team or work lead, preferred.
Certification/Licensure:  Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification from AALAS or an advanced certification required, examples include: CVT, LVT, RVT, Surgical Research Technician (SRT) or Surgical Research Specialist (SRS) from Academy of Surgical Research.
An equivalent combination of education, experience, and certifications may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
