Network Engineer I / Information Technologist I

Position Summary

The Network Engineer I is responsible for activities related to the selection, design, implementation, support, and maintenance of network information systems supporting the activities of MSU. They must be able to effectively document, and communicate key information about the systems and related components, and coordination within their team and other IT, Customer, and Vendor teams. MSU’s Network Engineers need to be capable of tracking issues and escalation, risk identification and management, and process identification and improvement relating to system and network components and tasks.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed; experience with logical and physical networks and related system technology; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 


Desired Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of successful project management experience preferred.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills to isolate network faults utilizing packet sniffers, enterprise network analysis tools and other available information. 
  • Experience with DNS, DHCP and IP management tools. 
  • Ability to resolve problems with layers 2-7 of the network stack. 
  • Experience with administration of enterprise wireless systems and 802.11a/g/n/ac protocols. 
  • Working understanding of networking protocols, routing protocols, optical networking, security technologies, traffic engineering/modeling and data analysis/modeling. 
  • Ability to work with end users to determine software specifications, hardware requirements and process improvement workflows. 
  • Ability to create system documentation, project plans, test scripts and education materials. 
  • General familiarity with end user business practices, concepts and terminology sufficient to support the applications in a higher education environment. 
  • Demonstrated ability to influence people to action without direct organizational control.
