Temporary Environmental Health Assistant

JOB SUMMARY
The Washtenaw County Health Department is seeking applications for a paid position as a Summer Environmental Health Assistant within our Environmental Health Division. This position will primarily support the recreational water program within the Environmental Health Division. This program aims to ensure that public bathing beach and swimming pool waters are safe and sanitary. Other job duties may be assigned based on need in the division.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Essential Duties:

  • Collecting samples of public swimming pool water for laboratory analysis; notifying operators of unsafe results; and providing instruction on appropriate follow-up.
  • Collecting samples of public bathing beach water for laboratory analysis; evaluating results; and, working with senior staff to determine if beach closures or advisories are warranted.
  • Data entry of water sample results in associated software programs.
  • Review of basic health and safety standards during water sample collection and communication of gaps in standards to appropriate parties.
  • Accompanying sanitarians and other department staff on regulatory inspections of body art facilities, day care centers, food service establishments, temporary food service operations, public swimming pools, public beaches, facilities that store potentially hazardous or polluting materials, private drinking water wells, and/or onsite sewage disposal systems.
  • Completing a special project based on the assistant¿s skills and interests, in consultation with department staff.
  • Utilizing current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
  • Support of Environmental Health projects, initiatives and programs as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
Possession of valid Michigan Vehicle Operator's license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials and a video display terminal (computer) screen and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone.

The employee must be mobile both in an office setting and in the field with the ability to stand, sit, stoop and kneel, use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must lift or push/pull objects of up to 30 lbs. without assistance. Accommodation will be made, as needed, for employees required to lift or move objects that exceed this weight. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works both in the office and at other work sites and regularly travels between work sites using a motor vehicle. Though applicable safety procedures are documented and utilized, the incumbent may be exposed to unsanitary or unhygienic materials, individuals and situations while performing required duties. The noise level in the work environment varies from quiet to moderate.

Employee must be comfortable in and around bodies of water to perform sampling duties, including but not limited to submerging arm into water, using waders to enter bodies of water to take samples and use appropriate equipment to perform sampling.

EDUCATION
High school graduate or equivalent. Active enrollment in a Bachelors or Masters Degree program or equivalent to the completion of two years of college with an emphasis on Environmental Health, Biology, Chemistry or a related field is strongly preferred.

EXPERIENCE
Ten (10) months to one (1) year of customer service experience.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
This temporary position is full-time 37.5 hours per week for a term beginning mid-March through mid-Summer. Typical work hours are 8:30am - 5:00pm, Monday - Friday.
