GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 


The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking to hire two Biologist Technicians – Fisheries to assist fisheries biologists with surveys for Colorado River Cutthroat Trout in southwest Wyoming. The technicians will assist with electrofishing surveys, genetic sample collection, and equipment upkeep and maintenance. These are contract positions funded from July 10, 2023 to October 31, 2023. This field position will require operation of trucks, trailers, ATVs, and electrofishing equipment in rivers and streams. This position will be based out of Green River, Wyoming. Applicants unable to work the duration of the position should not apply.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

 
  • Work with the public and private landowners and represent the WGFD in a professional manner.
  • Safely operate electrofishing equipment.
  • Safely handle, identify, and sample collected fishes.
  • Compile and enter collected data.
  • Safely operate and maintain trucks, trailers, and ATVs used to access remote locations.

 
QUALIFICATIONS:
PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:


Preference will be given to those pursuing a career in fisheries. Preference may include those with a high school degree plus experience in fish and wildlife resource management, research, or college coursework towards a degree in fishery or wildlife management, ichthyology, hydrology, watershed science, or other closely related fields.

KNOWLEDGE:


  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and be able to work well with others in a team setting. 
  • Experience with fish identification and fish handling.
  • Experience with backpack and raft/barge electrofishing.
  • Ability to safely operate and troubleshoot electrofishing equipment.
  • Ability to work in the field in remote areas, often in adverse conditions.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

 
  • Technicians must be able to work well independently with minimal supervision and work well with others on a small crew.
  • These are field positions that require physical labor, such as hiking, wading, and carrying backpacks.
  • Fieldwork can occur in inclement weather, and these positions will require camping in the field.

  • FLSA: Non-exempt
  • Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check prior to appointment.
  • Lodging, waders, rain gear, uniform, and all other necessary field equipment and expenses will be provided when in the field. Off duty housing is not provided.
