STAFF SCIENTIST, Super-Resolution Microscopy-Henderson Lab

POSITION TITLE: Staff Scientist-Super-Resolution Microscopy
 
POSITION SUMMERY:
The Staff Scientist will assist the Core Director with the operations of a state-of-the-art, multi-user Microscopy Laboratory at The Scripps Research Institute and will report to the Microscopy Core Director.
 
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES:
  • Assist with operations of super-resolution microscopy systems, including a newly installed MINFLUX system.
  • Undertake projects or tasks related to super-resolution microscopy.
  • Provide training on the operation of the super-resolution microscopes to TSRI scientists, faculty and staff.
  • Maintain the microscopes and associated equipment, troubleshooting problems and assuring instrument integrity by arranging for service or by providing solutions. Oversee operation of super-resolution microscopes and maintenance of ancillary equipment, including QC, validation, and day-to- day operation.
  • Arrange for equipment service as needed.
  • Undertake sample preparation for super-resolution microscopy.
  • Assist users, and/or provide user training in areas of MINFLUX microscope operation, specimen preparation, imaging, analysis and documentation. Provide necessary quality-controlled protocols and reagents for direct use in applications or for user applications as needed.
  • Maintain a current understanding of “state-of-the-art” knowledge in the SR fields.
  • Maintain all records relevant to instrument usage, maintenance, material and reagent use, chemical stocks and other inventories.
  • Coordinate with Microscopy Core staff to administer correlative microscopy applications utilizing LM and EM.
  • Assist with billing for services on schedule as required by the financial system.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position works in a laboratory environment. Further details of the physical requirements of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process.
 
REQUIREMENTS: 
  • Ph.D. in a life science field, such as cell biology, developmental biology, biochemistry, biophysics or similar.
  • Experience with advanced photonics.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working with super-resolution microscopy (especially STORM).
  • Working knowledge of design, theory and operation of advanced light microscopy systems, including skill and experience in their operation.
  • Experience with biological experimental design and implementation.
  • Ability to troubleshoot when problems arise and determine course of action for maintenance and service.
  • Experience training others in advanced microscopy systems and techniques.
  • Experience in digital image acquisition and preparation, including familiarity with image analysis software such as Fiji/ImageJ, Imaris, Image Pro, etc.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other software.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and standard operating procedures need ed to carry out all job responsibilities in a safe manner in order to protect oneself and those around them, minimizing or eliminating exposure to hazardous materials and/or conditions.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and technical problem solving skills. The individual must be able to organize electronic data, information and images as well as laboratory equipment (microscopes, sample preparation, etc.).
  • Ability to effectively organize their time, and that of others, to accommodate user needs and be responsive to the user base in both a timely and equitable manner.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, especially in developing experimental approaches in collaboration with PI’s.
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse array of people from a wide variety of cultural and educational backgrounds, both individually and in groups.
COMPENSATION: The expected hiring range for this position is $64,480.00 to $87,360.00 per year, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
