The mission of NCIPC is to prevent injuries and violence through Science and Action and is the leading expert on protecting people, saving lives, and reducing costs of injuries and violence. NCIPC’s focus is on preventing unintentional injuries and violence to include: 
Drug Overdoses Transportation Safety 
Suicide Traumatic Brain Injury 
Gun Violence Adverse Childhood Experiences 
Injuries and violence harm Americans every day. To put that into context… In the United States, injury is the leading cause of death of children and adults ages 1-45. Each year, injuries, and violence lead to about: 
  • 27 MILLION emergency department visits 
  • 240,000 DEATHS 1 person every 2 minutes 
  • 50,000 DEATHS in hospitals from injuries 
  • $4.2 TRILLION in lifetime medical care and lost productivity costs 
Within our Center we have three (3) major divisions: 
  • Division of Injury Prevention (DIP). DIP leads efforts to reduce unintentional and self-directed injuries at the CDC. DIP’s mission is to prevent injuries by connecting data, science, and action. 
  • Division of Overdose Prevention (DOP). To monitor, prevent, and reduce harms associated with drug use misuse and overdose. 
  • Division of Violence Prevention (DVP). A violence- free society in which all people and communities are safe, healthy, and thriving.  
  • In addition to our major divisions, we also have an Office of Informatics, Office of Science, Office of Strategy & Innovation, Office of Communications, Office of Policy and Partnerships, and the Office of Program Management and Operations.
