The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking to hire Nongame Bird Biologist to implement Wyoming's (State Wildlife Action Plan) SWAP while overseeing Wyoming's Nongame Bird Program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Coordinates management of the statewide nongame bird program by developing and implementing management or research projects that address the needs identified in Wyoming's SWAP and benefit nongame birds and Species of Greatest Conservation need.
  • Represent the Department on a wide variety of interagency recovery, conservation, and working groups such as: Partners in Flight, Integrated Monitoring in Bird Conservation Regionals Partnership, Central Flyway Nongame Migratory Bird Technical Committee, etc.
  • Develops and disseminates technical and non-technical information on birds to the public, agencies, and NGO's.
  • Maintains and updates various avian databases.
  • Coordinates the management, conservation, inventory, and monitoring of Threatened, Endangered, and Species of Greatest Conservation needs across multi-jurisdictional boundaries.
  • Establishes management goals and objectives, conducts field surveys and analyzes data for the statewide nongame bird program; collaborates with Department personnel to plan habitat proposals to ensure consideration of game and nongame needs.
  • Makes recommendations to guide policies or procedures by diagnosing and addressing complex programs that require technical knowledge.
  • Reviews all biologic data on nongame birds collected within the work unit and fulfills annual reporting requirements.
  • Provides comments on Wildlife Environmental Reviews to the Department's Habitat Protection Program and assists Regional Wildlife Biologists with their review process.


Preference will be given to those with a Bachelor's Degree in wildlife management or closely related fields. Preference will also be given to candidates with a Master's Degree with an emphasis in nongame birds as well as work experience related to nongame birds.
Preference will be given to candidates willing to work out of the Lander region.

**Must have a valid driver’s license. 


  • Knowledge of the life history and ecology of nongame birds as well as data collection techniques such as aerial classification surveys using fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, visual and auditory identification using a variety of methodologies and equipment, avian live capture and marking techniques, and night surveys on foot, snow machines, cross-country skis, and snowshoes.
  • Ability to communicate and coordinate the use of wildlife data collection techniques for nongame birds to attain management goals and objectives.
  • Knowledge of management and conservation issues pertaining to nongame birds such as analysis of population trends, distribution, and movement data; analysis of habitat suitability for nongame birds; intra-and interagency communication.
  • Ability to develop survey techniques, analyze data, infer population trends from a wide variety of data sets, and advocate for nongame bird species.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively under adverse weather and working conditions with little to no supervision. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Program supervisor and other Department employees, nongame temporary and contract employees supervised by the Nongame Section Supervisor as well as personnel from other agencies.
  • Ability to use and teach others to use a variety of equipment to complete surveys and attain management objectives, such as 4-wheel drive vehicle, canoe, kayak, motorboat, drift boat, horses, snow machine, all-terrain vehicle, computer software, avian capture and banding equipment, call-playback equipment and optical equipment.
  • Willingness and ability to fly in fixed-and rotary-winged aircraft is mandatory.
  • Intermediate knowledge of the agency and organizational programs and policy necessary to effectively lead work units and accomplish programmatic objectives.
  • Basic knowledge of fiscal procedures, including contributing to budget development and remaining within an assigned budget.
  • Knowledge and ability to diagnose and resolve complex problems that pertain to programmatic objectives and potential conflict relating to nongame birds and work unit.
  • Excellent physical condition and able to work outdoors under challenging conditions. Knowledge of wilderness survival skills, knowledge of aircraft safety and operational procedures, and ability to use a variety of tools and equipment to accomplish statewide nongame bird surveys and management goals and objectives.


Bachelor's Degree (typically in Wildlife Management)

1-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Wildlife Management) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Wildlife Biologist II

  • The position requires lifting heavy objects and strenuous physical exertion at times. Must be able to lift 50lbs or more.
  • Be able to work in various weather conditions and environments.
  • Must be able to work all days of the week and varied work hours, including weekends, holidays, and early mornings, evenings/late nights, and spending the night(s) in remote locations either in a tent, camper, or cabin. This position is on call to respond to job requirements.
  • Travel is required.

  • FLSA: Exempt
  • Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check before appointment.
  • Work location may be based anywhere statewide, however, Lander is preferred.
  • CDL is not required for this position.
