SPECIALIST, ENVIRONMENTAL
Location: 1617 S ACOMA ST BUILDING
Work Year: Traditional 235 work days - PROTECH/ADMIN
FTE: 1.0
Salary Range: $60,541 - $73,357 annually
  
Essential Functions and Objectives:
 
The Environmental Services Specialist supports compliance programs for various federal, state, and local environmental regulations pertaining to school safety, asbestos, hazardous materials, indoor air quality, lead, water, stormwater, lab safety, and chemical hygiene. Provides assistance and support on environmental and safety issues.
 
- Operates and maintains multi-gas meters, air flow meters, indoor air sampling instruments, and other equipment; and maintains calibration schedule.
- Conducts lab safety inspections and inventories chemicals for compliance with regulations, proper storage, labeling, and signage; identifies materials for disposal; checks fume hoods, eye washes/showers, and other safety equipment to make sure they are operating as designed; completes inventories and submits to fire department on an annual basis; maintains Safety Data Sheet (SDS) database and ensures current inventory matches sheets listed and that updates are sent to schools and departments.
- Coordinates District-wide water sampling efforts and maintains sampling schedule and tracking of all data and corrective actions.
- Performs stormwater inspections of permanent BMPs at sites that are part of the District’s non-standard stormwater permit.
- Provides staff training as needed or bulletins to staff on environmental issues; researches regulatory requirements and changes
- Performs inspections, assessments of facilities conditions for compliance to environmental health guidelines; collects asbestos, lead, soil, water, and air samples (mold, radon, other) as needed; and prepares a summary of findings.
- Develops and maintains Environmental Services databases; writes standard operating procedures and documentation for using the database, and trains District personnel in its use.
- Assists asbestos project manager with coordination of abatement activities with contractors, consultants, and District staff and manages other contractors performing environmental work, as needed.
 
Knowledge, Experience & Other Qualifications:
 
- Minimum of two (2) years' experience or advanced training in one or more of the following areas: environmental compliance, hazardous materials/waste management, asbestos inspection, indoor air quality and stormwater.
- Hazardous Materials Emergency Responder Level III or OSHA 40-hr.
- Hazardous Waste Site Operations (HAZWOPER).
- Asbestos Building Inspector or Asbestos Planner.
- Certified Industrial Hygienist is a plus.
