Seeking an Integration Scientist with experience in developing and transferring biology protocols to microfluidics/fluidics systems to contribute to the next generation of genome sequencing systems. This position is in the Advanced Platform Group and involves laying the foundation for future cutting-edge products. The team is responsible for the earliest phases of product development including: collecting requirements, demonstrating feasibility, collaborating with different functional team and building organizational consensus.
The ideal candidate will have solid background in biology/molecular biology and experience with translating biology protocol from macro-scale to microfluidics is a big plus. You will help to conceptualize, develop and optimize assays and processes to maintain and expand Illumina's market share in current and emerging markets. As important will be a flexible mindset to switch between different research topics. A driven creativity and a passion for solving difficult problems in cross-disciplinary teams are crucial.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, conduct, analyze, troubleshoot and present experiments to demonstrate feasibility of new methods and provide guidance for designing innovative consumables
  • Work with cross-disciplinary teams to optimize assay conditions to achieve commercial levels of stability, robustness, and performance
  • Identify creative solutions to problems and actively participate in improving methods.
  • Significantly contribute to development of new architectures for high volume consumables that integrates microfluidics, chemistry and sensing
  • Brainstorm new concepts and drive towards down selection and proving out feasibility
  • Provide updates to upper management

Qualifications:

  • PhD level (ideally in discipline such Biology, Molecular biology, Chemical Engineering, Bio Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or the like), with relevant experience to the responsibilities described above
  • 1-3 years after PhD of demonstrated experience in applied research (academic or industrial/start-up environment) or 8-10 years of experience in lieu of an advanced degree.
  • Hand-on experience with molecular biology and ideally, DNA sequencing
  • Experience with translating biological protocols from lab-scale to microfluidics is a plus
  • Experience with developing DNA sequencing platform is a plus
  • Experience with software for statistical analysis
  • Demonstrated efficient handling of teamwork and success in a collaborative environment
  • Excellent presentation skills
