POSITION TITLE: Biophysics and Biochemistry Core Facility, Scientific Manager
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Biochemistry and Biophysics Core Facility Scientific Manger will manage and participate in the daily operation of the Biochemistry and Biophysics Core Facility, providing services to enable the investigation of physical properties of biomolecules, and biomolecular interactions such as protein-protein, protein-DNA/RNA and DNA/RNA/protein-small molecules, and characterization of the structure and dynamics of macromolecules. The Scientific Manager facilitates access to instrumentation and when appropriate, engages in collaborative research with faculty and outside users.
The Scientific Manager will provide technical expertise in the form of service, research consultation, and training, ensure that the facility’s research support capabilities are maintained in an optimal state, publicizes the capabilities of Biophysics Core Facility, and develop its customer base.
The Scientific Manager is responsible for training researchers in the proper use of the Biochemistry and Biophysics Core Facility instrumentation, which requires a wide range of knowledge and expertise. Instrumentation: Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR), BioLayer Interferometry (BLI), Fluorescence-Based Spectroscopy (FP/FA), Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC), Miro-Scale Thermophoresis (MST), Circular dichroism (CD), UV-Vis Spectroscopy (UV Spec), Mass Photometry (MP), Analytical Ultracentrifugation (AUC), Phosphor/Gel/Western Imaging, and more.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Develop scheduling and user policies, and charge rates for services
- Working directly and in conjunction with Scripps Research faculty and outside users, the Scientific Manager assists in the design, execution and analysis of projects within the Core, and participates in the development of novel processes and procedures as needed.
- Assist users in assessing their experimental needs; act as a resource by fielding questions and offering instrument training and expert guidance in available methods.
- Perform experiments not available as a self-service option to users.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Core facility including designing procedures and work flow processes, developing and implementing a budget, tracking Core services usage for invoicing purposes, managing the activities of Core staff, and other related duties and tasks as required or assigned.
- Hire, train and educate the Core staff.
- Establish and maintain an up-to-date website and online calendar with information pertinent to core policies, procedures, available technology, and scheduling
- Ensure that instruments are maintained to the highest working standards, including regular hardware/software maintenance and repairs
- Negotiate and supervise any service contracts with vendors as they relate to the Core
- Order parts and/or service as required
- May engage in collaborative research with members of the Institute and Core users when appropriate.
- May publish original work in peer reviewed journals or attend scholarly conferences.
- Work with Scripps researchers to apply for external funding and for the acquisition of new or updated instrumentation.
- Collaborate with Scripps principal investigators to write proposals to granting agencies in support of Core facility usage and technology development pertinent to the service facility.
- Work with Faculty to identify funding opportunities in areas supported by the service facility
- Perform other duties as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- A. PhD in Biophysics, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field required
- Minimum 5 years of progressive, cumulative experience in biophysical analysis
- Significant experience in either SPR or BLI, as well as at least two other techniques listed under “Instrumentation” section.
- Experience in planning, operational forecasting, and grant writing
- Demonstrated ability to teach and train others
- Ability to effectively organize own time, and that of others, to accommodate user needs and be responsive to the user base in both a timely and equitable manner
- Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal communication of ideas to develop experimental approaches in collaboration with PIs
- Ability to communicate with a diverse array of people from a wide variety of cultural and educational backgrounds, individually or in groups
- Excellent experimental design and data analysis skills
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
