Dental Clinic Lab Assistant

POSITION PURPOSE:
This position exists to support the dental programs and the dental clinic. The Lab Assistant’s primary focus is to keep the clinic and lab equipment operational at all times, as well as keeping the labs and clinic stocked with supplies, and to maintain an inventory of all supplies, equipment and products. The Lab Assistant will serve as the infection control officer, radiation officer, and the OSHA/safety officer for the dental programs. Under limited supervision, the Lab Assistant will carry out prescribed instructional activities for students under the direction of dental hygiene and dental assisting instructors.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:           
·       Post-secondary or industry certificate/diploma/degree or relevant licensure from Minnesota Dental Assistant License and Dental Assisting National Board Exam (DANB) certification.
AND
One year of teaching/tutoring experience in Dental Hygiene/Assistant at the high school level or above
OR
·       4 years of work experience in Dental Hygiene/Assistant where no degree/certificate/diploma/licensure is required
OR
·       An equivalent combination of education and work experience.
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
·       Bachelor’s degree
·       Dental knowledge sufficient to respond to questions raised by students in lab and clinic.
·       Dental knowledge of anatomy, teeth, instruments and equipment.
·       Knowledge of sterilization/infection control protocols to assure proper sterilization for the safety of students, faculty, staff, and dental clinic patients.  
·       Previous teaching experience
·       Skill to communicate with others in a cooperative and respectful manner.
·       Skill to inventory supplies, equipment, and lab items.
·       Skill to stock supplies and products in the labs, clinic, and radiology rooms.
·       Skill to maintain equipment, troubleshoot problems, make repairs and contact vendors for parts and service.
·       Ability to function independently to carry out assigned tasks and duties related to sterilization.
·       Ability to work effectively with the students, dentists, and dental faculty to meet the sterilization, infection control, and general operational needs of the dental clinic.
·       Ability to report to work regularly and on time.
 
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES include BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
·       Maintain equipment and supplies of dental lab
·       Dental clinic infection control officer, radiation officer, OSHA/safety coordinator
·       Assist students in dental clinic, sterilization area, and labs at the direction of faculty
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION with or without an accommodation:
·       Ability to perform work that requires the following lifting/carrying strengths:
o   Medium Work: Significant amount of walking or standing; pushing and pulling of arms and legs
o   Lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs.
·       Ability to perform in a work environment which may include the following physical functions:
o  Standing, walking, sitting, lifting above shoulder, lifting waist to chest, lifting below waist, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting/pivot, reaching, simple grasp, fine manipulation, feeling, talking, hearing, near vision (up to 20), midrange vision
