Position Summary

The MSU Bioeconomy Institute is seeking a full-time Biotechnician to support fermentation operations in the Pilot Plant at the Lansing facility. The MSU Bioeconomy Institute helps organizations accelerate the development of processes for new biobased products to commercialization. The successful applicant will be responsible for the following activities.

Preparing the media, solutions, instruments, and equipment needed to perform fermentations processes at laboratory and pilot scales. Operating and adjusting equipment based on observations, data collection, and goals of the process to ensure
the safe and successful completion of the project.

Preparing and running samples on analytical instruments according to established guidelines.
Monitoring aseptic growth of microorganisms in flasks, on solid media, and in stirred tank reactors, adjusting conditions as needed and determining the purity of cultures.

Entering data into batch records and spreadsheet workbooks and judging the quality
of data based on pass/fail criteria.

Cleaning and sterilizing vessels and other equipment.

Ordering and restocking laboratory supplies.

The successful candidate must be able to work well individually or as part of a team, have a good mechanical aptitude, and be a self-starter. The hours for this position are variable, and will include some night and weekend shifts. Knowledge and experience with aseptic techniques, large scale vessels, or processing equipment is desirable.


Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge acquired by completing an associates degree program in microbiology, molecular biology, chemistry, chemical engineering or other related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience performing basic laboratory techniques specific to the area of employment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in microbiology, molecular biology, chemistry, chemical engineering or a related field are desirable.

Work Hours

The position requires some shift work on nights and weekends.

Summary of Physical Demands

This job requires moderate physical effort such as lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs., and requires manual dexterity to work with laboratory equipment and supplies.

Summary of Health Risks

This job will involve working with potentially dangerous chemical and/or biological hazards. The position also involves working around loud equipment, and machinery common to a microbiological pilot plant.
