Youth ESL Volunteer Teacher

Job Overview/Summary: The Youth ESOL Teacher (Spanish-speaking) is an unpaid volunteer position. The role is responsible for planning and delivering engaging, responsive youth ESOL curriculum and instruction to a group of culturally-diverse IRC high school students, most of whom are Spanish-speaking. Youth ESOL classes will take place for 2 hours each Saturday, in-person from 10AM-12PM EST, throughout the fall 2021 term.
Position term: January 15 – May 14, 2022
Hours: Teaching: 10AM-12PM EST in-person; Planning & Grading: 1-2 additional hours, weekly

Major Responsibilities:
·      Plan and deliver culturally competent, trauma-informed ESOL curriculum and lesson plans for a culturally-diverse beginner Youth ESOL class (high schoolers), most of whom are Spanish-speakers
·      Submit detailed slide decks and student activities for review by IRC Youth Education Coordinator, weekly, in advance of date of instruction
·      Regularly review pupils’ progress and submit detailed class/student progress summaries for each class session
·      Complete all required reporting on time. Comply with all agency policies and protocols
·      Productively communicate and collaborate with all IRC Staff, Interns, and other Volunteers

Position Reports to: Youth Education Coordinator

Job Requirements:
·     English and Spanish language proficiency
·     Bachelor’s degree in education or related field; Candidate for a Master’s degree preferred
·     A minimum of 2 years teaching ESL/ESOL
·     TESOL certification highly preferred
·     Proven success planning and delivering culturally responsive, trauma-informed, sheltered-instructional curricula for classes of diverse beginner ELLs
·     Cultural competency, required
·     Experience working with refugees or other immigrant populations, highly preferred
·     Ability to work independently and as part of a team
·     Strong proficiency using Google Classroom and G Suite programs, highly preferred
·     Highly organized, dependable, responsive, and collaborative work style required
