Veterans Engagement Coordinator

Want to make a difference in a veteran's life? Join us at the Orting Veterans Village and work with homeless veterans in a communal atmosphere.

Orting Veterans Village is a supportive housing community for 35 homeless veterans living in Pierce County. We opened our doors in June 2021 as part of a wider network of tiny house villages known as Quixote Communities. Quixote Communities created Orting Veterans Village for homeless veterans after teaming up with the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs and the Puget Sound Veterans Hope Center. Focused on community living, Orting life centers around the community building and the belief that everyone deserves a home.

Each resident at the village has their own separate tiny home, can lock their front doors, sleep in their own bed, and close their curtains. The villages provide residents with greater privacy than a shelter or apartment settings, as well as a new sense of security about their lives. Additionally, our houses are also economically and environmentally efficient, costing less than half of what it costs to build your average apartment. We use long-lasting efficient LED lighting as well as low-flow toilets and showers to reduce our water consumption.

The project alleviates poverty by increasing access to life-sustaining resources. The VISTA will build capacity & support sustainability by creating systems & procedures for recruiting, coordinating, tracking, training, and acknowledging volunteers & donors for the new village. The project allows community members to build relationships with the village while increasing community connection for residents.
