Health & Safety Intern

Position: Health & Safety Intern
Location: Eagle Mine, Upper Peninsula, Michigan, USA

General Description:
The Safety Intern will support the Health & Safety, mining, milling teams of the Eagle Mine and Humboldt Mill near Marquette, Michigan in developing and sustaining a safe, secure and healthful workplace for all employees and contractors.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provides support to the Health & Safety Team in championing zero harm
• Conducts surveys, studies, and audits to support workplace H&S
• Assists in the development of policies and procedures
• Conducts health and safety specific training for the mine and mill sites
• Compiles data necessary to complete internal health and safety performance reports
• Ensures effective implementation of the health and safety program at the Mine and Mill sites
• Assists with occupational health and industrial hygiene activities
• Other duties as assigned

Education, qualifications and experience:
• Must have attained required credits and be considered to have obtained junior or senior level status in an accredited Occupational Health & Safety program required
• Must be able to work in a surface and underground industrial mining environment required
• Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license required
• Basic skills in use of Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Visio, Project, Excel) preferred
• Technical document and report writing skills preferred

HSEC ACCOUNTABILITIES
H & S Advisors are appointed to advise General Managers and Managers in effectively managing health, safety for the Sites or departments for which they have responsibility and to assist them where appropriate. They are also responsible for establishing and maintaining the health and safety programs. Specifically, H & S Advisors are accountable for:
• Assisting General Manager in developing and implementing Site health, safety and environmental procedures that conform to the requirements of the LMC Standards and Procedures.
• Providing H & S advice, support and assistance to the Site General Manager, Managers and members of the site management team.
• Maintaining a risk assessment process for the site(s).
• Participating in the sharing of relevant information and resources across LMC.
• Acting as a part of the corporate H & S team and assisting the SVP Projects in the further development of corporate HSEC standards and procedures and participate in H & S audits.
• Preparing H & S reports required by the General Manager and the SVP Projects in a timely manner.
• Identifying training needs for employee groups within the operation and conducting training sessions as required

Employees are responsible for performing all tasks in accordance with relevant HSEC Site Procedures, so as to work safely and keep the workplace safe. Everyone in the workplace ─ both employees and employers ─ is responsible for his or her own safety and for the safety of co-workers. Lundin Mining Company is responsible for determining steps required to ensure health and safety of all employees. Specifically, all employees must:
• Accept personal responsibility for HSEC
• Identify hazards unsafe conditions, unsafe actions and conditions that could result in damage to property, injury or impacts to the environment
• Obey any instruction issued to protect their own personal health and safety, and the health and safety of others
• Report, as soon as practicable to their Manager any situations where HSEC requirements are not being conformed to within their work area
• Avoid endangerment to any other person through any act or omission
• Use equipment correctly particularly that provided for health, hygiene and safety purposes
• Report all incidents
• Participate in HSEC training provided to them
