Apply GIS & LiDAR Skills in Fire - Work with the Cherokee National Forest Fire Team FS-USA-71

Are you interested in fire & how it is used for natural resource management? Interested in applying classroom skills to real world applications?

Come support the Fire Management Shop on the Cherokee National Forest with ArcGIS and Lidar work. Support role for ArcGIS and Lidar. Turn GIS and Lidar data into something useful for program managers in the US Forest Service. Work with the Fire Management Shop within the Cherokee National Forest and contribute to important decisions.

The Fire Management Shop is looking for an eager and qualified intern to assist with GIS and Lidar work. This would be a great opportunity for students to apply classroom skills into real world applications. Intern would work with a variety of GIS applications, including Citrix, Arc in general, AGOL, Survey123, and Collector. Potential to assist in other departments within the forest, to learn more about different areas. Preference will be given to those with intermittent to advanced skills in ArcGIS.

Major Duties:

• Help to create, maintain and archive data to ensure quality control for the program.

• Conversion of data referencing aerial photos, plats, maps and other materials to identify and digitize fire zones

• Create maps from collected geospatial data to a standardized program template for use

• Preform Analysis using geostatistic/geoprocessing tools be able to calculate/summarize necessary geospatial information.

• Assign ownership, parcel, county and other relevant data via attribute tables

• Organize, clean and scan hard copy file data into a digital format.

• Have great communication, writing skills, and be a detail oriented individual.

• Ability to teach others how to use ArcGIS software.

• Learn to use Collector and ESRI and Survey123.

The virtual intern chosen will get experience in working with Esri, ArcGIS Online (AGOL), and other collaborative mapping platforms. Opportunities to formally present outcomes to regional leaders in the Forest Service and other professional development opportunities will be given.

Skills and interests in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Mobile Technology required.

Volunteers will be signed up under Individual Volunteer Agreements (OF-301a). All Volunteers are asked to record their hours worked on this project and will be reported in the Volunteer & Service Programs Accomplishments Database (VSReports), the official reporting database.
