Special Events Intern

Special Events Intern - Position Description and Expectations
Internship Length: August-October (flexible); hours as needed for college credit
Location: Holland, MI

Statement of Purpose
The Special Events Internship at Lighthouse Immigrant Advocates is designed to provide an intern with the opportunity to gain experience in the areas of non-profit event planning, including event committee leadership, fundraising, communication, volunteer coordination, event coordination and event logistics. This is an unpaid position, eligible for a stipend at the conclusion of the internship (or each month). The intern will be supervised by the Executive Director. 

Qualifications & Skills
  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate institution as a Junior or Senior
  • Professional written and oral communication
  • Data entry skills
  • Proficient use of Google Suite and Microsoft Office 
  • Currently pursuing a major in Hospitality and Event Planning preferred

Job Tasks
  • Assisting as second lead coordinating LIA’s annual fundraising event, Strength in Stories
  • Preparing agendas and leading event committee meetings twice a month
  • Maintaining a return of investment tool for the event
  • Maintaining event task list
  • Submitting sponsorship requests online as needed
  • Day-of-event volunteer lead and coordination

Expectations
The LIA intern is expected to:
  • Represent the organization in a professional manner, using professional language, attitude, and behavior at all times;
  • Be a detail-oriented and self-motivated individual, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
  • Fulfill the agreed upon internship hours with prompt and consistent attendance;
  • Complete all assigned tasks to the best of their ability in the allotted time frame;
  • Communicate any needs, concerns, or questions to the supervisor;
  • Be in attendance the day of the event, before and after to help with set-up and breakdown.

Evaluation
During the course of the internship, the individual goals for this position will be reevaluated in conversation with the Intern’s direct supervisor. At the conclusion of the internship, the intern will write a self-reflective summative evaluation to be reviewed by the Executive Director and will be submitted to his/her crediting agency, college, or university. The LIA Internship may be terminated at any time under the advice of the Executive Director if the intern is failing to meet the requirements and expectations outlined above.
