Post Doctorate RA - Stable isotope analysis and chemical purification of organic mixtures
We seek a research associate excited to contribute to a series of stable isotope investigations of fuel samples with the goal of developing methods to quantify biofeedstock conversion to a final fuel product. Significant time will be spent processes and analyzing samples for stable isotope analysis using isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) and the intern will be expected to gain experience in routine operation of IRMS and associated instrumentation. We anticipate the intern contributing to both bulk level and compounds specific stable isotope analysis and previous experience with these techniques is preferred but not required. Further, the successful applicant will contribute to developing methods for isolation of specific classes of compounds from fuels which may require various forms of chromatography or solution-based techniques. Ability to follow verbal instructions and detailed written protocols is crucial as is the ability to synthesize previous information to help problem solve and develop modified laboratory approaches. Attention to detail and safety during sampling handling, analysis, and subsequent data entry and an ability to bring tasks to completion is key. Further, a track record of scientific publication and dedication to timely development of publications under this project is critical. There may be additional opportunities to contribute to the development of site-specific stable isotope analysis within organic molecules. This position provides an interdisciplinary opportunity for students interested in preparing for careers in research science or academia to work in a world class laboratory with established scientists and acquire valuable research experience.
The successful applicant will have strong laboratory experience and research experience complementary to the planned work. Beneficial skills include:
- Prior work with analytical instrumentation, especially mass spectrometry. Note, experience with isotope ratio mass spectrometry is viewed very favorably.
- Analytical experience with organic separations and analysis in a detailed and safe manner
- Background demonstrating commitment to timely publication of laboratory results

Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with a Ph.D. in the natural sciences are preferred with specific course experiences including components of analytical chemistry, instrumental analysis, organic purification techniques, and stable isotope analysis being preferred. Ideal candidates will be detail oriented, reliable, and motivated! Prior employment demonstrating a strong work ethic and commitment desired.
