Performance Nutrition Intern

The Detroit Lions are a professional American football team based in Detroit, Michigan. They are members of the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL), and play their home games at Ford Field in downtown Detroit. The team located to Detroit in 1934 and are the NFL's fifth oldest franchise.

The Detroit Lions currently need a Performance Nutrition Intern. It will be based out of the Detroit Lions Training Facility in Allen Park, Michigan. This position will report to the Director of Performance Nutrition. We will accept applications for this position until 11:59PM on June 22, 2021.

POSITION SUMMARY: 

The Performance Nutrition Intern reports to the Director of Performance Nutrition and is responsible for assisting with the planning, organizing, and execution of fueling. This preseason position will begin in July of 2021 through the conclusion of the Detroit Lions season. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Performance Nutrition Intern position will have daily responsibilities including, without limitation, the following:
  • Aid in all processes related to inventory; including but not limited to ordering, receiving and distribution of products/supplements.
  • Assist with the setup and implementation of new meal ordering system; including working with Levy’s food service staff to upload menus, add new players/personnel to database.
  • Oversee smoothie station operations and organize player orders.
  • Create new smoothies, menu items, and snack options that optimize performance and enhance recovery. 
  • Assist with daily nutrition-related tasks; including but not limited to: meal coverage, taste testing prior to meal time, hydration, monitoring grab and go inventory.
  • Assist with pre-practice and post-practice fueling set-up and execution.
  • Provide nutrition expertise to food service staff if necessary. 
  • Ensure safety and cleanliness procedures are followed. 
  • Provide nutrition expertise and education related to supplementation, energy needs, hydration needs, meal composition, and recovery strategies. 

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Must be accurate and efficient with ability to meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to prioritize time and tasks within a fast-paced environment.
  • Maintain professional behavior and communication at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
  • Completion of Dietetic Internship – RD eligible
  • Registered Dietitian
  • Experience working within athletics
  • Football nutrition experience preferred
