CLASSIFICATION: Advocate Volunteer
EXPECTED TIME COMMITMENT: 2-3 shifts/week; 15-20 hours total/week. Schedule agreed to and determined with supervisor; committed schedule a must.
SUPERVISOR:  Shelter Manager
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Resource Center Advocates ensure the safety and cleanliness of the shelter, answer the crisis line, provide intake assessment to determine eligibility for services, and complete client intake and exit procedures. The advocates also ensure client needs are met in a timely, ethical, and appropriate manner with the highest of quality.
 
Key Job Duties:
1)     Effectively answer the crisis line and respond appropriately to callers
2)     Assess client needs and qualification for services
3)     Complete client intake and exit procedures accurately
4)     Maintain cleanliness and safety of the shelter
5)     Attend agency staff meetings and in-service trainings as required
6)     All other duties as assigned by Shelter Manager or designee
 

Learning Objectives
·      Communicate with persons of different cultures or subcultures.
·      Monitor a community living shelter for compliance with grants and with Health and Safety Requirements.
·      Communicate professionally when representing the agency to the community.
·      Understanding of domestic violence dynamics, investment in the empowerment philosophy, organizational skills, crisis intervention skills, and an ability to access community resources. Training is provided.
·      Job Shadow and training opportunities a possibility
·      Completion of 25 hours of agency’s Domestic Violence Crisis Intervention Training
 
Knowledge or Skills Preferred or Required:
·      Crisis intervention training is provided and is mandatory prior to beginning internship.
·      Communication with persons of different cultures or subcultures. Interpersonal skills
·      Ability to handle crisis situations; use of empathy and the empowerment model.
·      Understanding and/or ability to learn domestic violence dynamics, investment in the empowerment philosophy, organizational skills, crisis intervention skills, and an ability to access community resources.
