The Suicide Prevention and Education Coordinator (SPEC) serves to facilitate implementation of suicide prevention strategies at UNO, UNMC and the surrounding metro area through education, monitoring and coordination of activities. The SPEC plans, develops, implements, and oversees all components of the Suicide Prevention Program. Duties include but are not limited to working with students, faculty and staff providing education, prevention and postvention services. This may include tracking all suicide attempts and students with serious suicide ideation and working in consultation with other care providers to offer comprehensive case management and coordination of academic considerations as needed in coordination with the Accessibility Services Center and the Dean of Students Office. The SPEC provides crisis intervention, suicide risk assessments, and safety plans for students via phone and in person. The SPEC provides debriefing and consultation to other Licensed Mental Health Practitioners at UNO & UNMC who engage in similar activities. Following completed suicides, the SPEC provides postvention services to survivors in coordination with other Student Success and Academic Affairs offices. The SPEC will be UNO & UNMC’s primary representative to community organizations including the Metro Area Suicide Prevention Coalition, the Kim Foundation, the National Suicide Prevention Program, and the American Suicide Prevention Foundation – Nebraska. The SPEC will stay abreast of local, regional, and national suicide trends and offer regular briefings.

Required Qualifications:
•Minimum of master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or related field.
•Minimum two years’ experience in college counseling, college student personnel or closely related field. Graduate Assistantship and Internship experience will be considered.
•Licensed to practice counseling in State of Nebraska. Provisional licensure will be considered.
•Valid driver’s license.
